The HSC Major Textile Projects were placed on display as part of the CAPA Showcase last week. The seven students who completed the course should all be very proud of their efforts over the last year in getting this big task completed.
Neveah Bateman gained inspiration for her project from the character Wipeout from the book Wings of Fire, as well as the designer known as Hebi-Haberdashery who specialties in plushies.
This whimsical creature, a dragon, was made from minky fabric and some leather. It will be used as a playtoy for children or just as an ornament to admire.
Elijah Croft designed his own pattern to crochet a top based on the Italian Summer, using his own hand dyed cotton yarn in an ombre effect. He matched this with a smart pair of tailored linen shorts. They were beautifully constructed. It was all about natural materials.
Syh Dodd used the ocean and all of its wonderful colours as her source of inspiration, and the designer Zuhair Murad. She altered the top pattern to make it her own, and used a stretch knit to provide a comfortable fit. The skirt was made using an A line shape. The outer layer was made of many tendrils using different chiffons, organzas and satins. These were overlocked using fishing line to create curls, representing the waves and the seaweed.
Freya Giles designed and constructed a playmat which turns into a carry bag, using patchwork and quilting as two of the main techniques. The inspiration was farmland, water and flowers, and the beauty of imagination that children have when playing. The project was accompanied by some hand made mice, which were very cute.
Michaela Gerard loved the whole magic of the circus and all that goes with it. She used a pattern that was very complicated but she made it her own, and adapted where needed to complete an amazing costume for a circus ring leader/master. Michaela kept to the traditional style using red and black heavy satin, with a few tweaks. The feature of this jacket was the inside lining, which had a uniquely designed and machine embroidered lion's head.
Ella Luchich based her creation on wedding dresses, flowers, embroidery and beading. All of these ideas were utilised in her layered chiffon dress. Beading adorned the bodice, whilst laser cut flowers were attached randomly to the flowing skirt.
Annabelle Pennington designed and made a quilt for her cousin, which was such a beautiful and thoughtful thing to do. She utilised Annie's favourite colour pink, and lovely printed floral fabric in cottons, very suitable for patchwork and quilting. Annabelle used various forms of fabric decoration which included stencilling, solar fast printing, applique and digital printing. The final step was to quilt the whole panel and then finish off with a border.
Well done HSC Textiles and Design students of 2025. We look forward to the results of your hard work.
