News - from the kitchen & garden with Chris and Eve

Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday

We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.

No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.

If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)

This week in garden class the 2/3's had a 'Chicken Therapy' session.  We took materials up to the orchard and I showed the students how to weave Gods Eyes.  Each student took a hessian sack to set up their own sit spot and did some weaving while the chickens and ducks foraged and came to check out what everyone was doing.  I'm trying to incorporate a monthly session for each class where we have some time to slow down and enjoy being outside while doing a creative project.  It's great for the kids to practice being calm and quiet around the chickens too.

Emily, from Resource Smart Schools, delivered an incursion this week for the 5/6 and 4/5 classes.  After a talk about nature journaling and a short video on local illustrator, Trace Bella, the students walked around the garden and chose some plant material to draw or paint.  Emily and I had set up two tables with different art supplies and the students sat down and spent the rest of the session playing with different techniques to create artworks incorporating their specimens.  The classes were very engaged and created some amazing drawings and paintings - so much talent!

cooking with Chris

This week in Cooking, Grade Prep and 1 made Spring Onion and Chive Pancakes that we served with Orange Vegetable Soup (we made and froze last term)

From the garden we used chives and spring onions.

Before we started our cooking this week we focused on washing and drying our hands properly before cooking.  We also made sure that during the class, students would wash their hands after touching food and utensils and touching their face.

In groups,  students kneaded the dough pressed it into a rectangle shape. They then took turns rolling the dough and turning it until they had rolled a long, thin rectangle. Everyone did a create job patiently rolling and turning the dough until it was thin enough that we could nearly see through it. (see photos)

Next we used scissors to chop the bunches of chives into small pieces to add to the spring onions.

Grade 1s worked with a Prep partner to add the chives and spring onions to the rolled out dough, then rolled up the dough into a long rectangle, then into a snail shape. Everyone did an amazing job to create the snail shape, then pressed it with their palm and used the rolling pin to roll the circle into a large spring onion pancake.

Cam worked with Nina, Silky and Odette to roll out the Gluten Free dough into a unique triangle shape to make the Gluten Free Spring Onion pancakes.  As the GF dough is softer they rolled the triangle into a croissant shape which made it easier aftet hey added the spring onions and chives.  Thanks Cam for designing the best way to roll the GF Pancakes.

After recess, Elio, Cooper, Nicholas, Poppie, Nina and Silky and Cam cooked the Spring Onion Pancakes.  Kristie’s group set the tables – they worked out how many places were needed and set out the correct number of plates and soup spoons, and set the table with cups and jugs of water. Ally and her group collected flowers to decorate the table.  We cut the Spring Onion Pancakes into quarters and dished up the Orange Vegetable Soup. Everyone was excited to try what they had cooked.  Great cooking Grade Prep and 1  and thanks Kristie, Cam and Scout.
