Year 5 Christmas Market

As part of their How We Organise Ourselves inquiry, our Year 5 students explored how empathy can inspire meaningful action — and they brought this to life at Tuesday’s Christmas Market. Using creativity, thoughtful design, and enterprise skills, students produced a wonderful range of handmade products. They stepped into the role of young entrepreneurs, budgeting for materials, tracking costs, and calculating profits for ALWS.

Along the way, they strengthened their collaboration skills — solving problems together, negotiating ideas, and supporting one another from planning to production. It was a true example of “empathy to impact.”

Thank you to all the families who supported their stalls. Your generosity helped our students raise funds for ALWS and make a real difference.

We still have a few items available, so a Mini Market will run this Friday 28th at lunchtime. Bring your coins!

Year 2 Rubbish Collection Crew in Action

Our Year 2B students have been putting their learning into action by becoming the school’s very own Rubbish Collection Crew. As part of their inquiry into caring for our environment and the living things around us, students are taking responsibility for keeping our school yard clean. In class we have learnt about pollution and how it can harm creatures and the environment.

We thought we should take our learning outside. Our next step is to ask for compost bins so we can add fruit waste and make the soil better. - Aavika Pandey

We pick up the rubbish because we don’t want the animals eating the rubbish and getting sick. We do this all the time and it makes our school look better. We would like to have compost bins next year. - Emilia Brown

When we pick up rubbish, we are protecting our school and the animals that live with us. – Shanaya Patel

Their small actions are making a big difference—showing that learning in the classroom can lead to positive change in the world around us.

Reflective Learners in Year 5

Throughout our How We Organise Ourselves business unit, Year 5 students have been developing their skills as reflective learners — thinking deeply about their choices, challenges, and growth.

Our recent Christmas Market was a wonderful success, giving students real-life opportunities to test their ideas, adapt their plans, and learn from experience.

Here are some of their reflections on what they learned and how they grew as young entrepreneurs:

In my first bookmark I tried my best to use the neatest handwriting possible, but it wasn’t neat enough, so I have to stop and reflect. I asked my team to help, and we came up with another solution.

We created different bookmarks, and they were very popular. Our team was successful because we set high standards, worked together and helped each other through the whole journey.

I was inspired by the German activity of designing images for t shirts. I decided to put my God given talents into my Christmas market product by drawing pictures onto white t-shirts. Sadly, when we tested the fabric markers, they did not last on the fabric.

I had to reflect and think about how to overcome this challenge. It was hard because I was devastated that my t-shirts didn’t work but we found a way to share them with the community. I created a new product of hand drawn anime posters too.

I was reflective in this unit because one of my group members went on early holidays and the rest of the team was still learning how to stay organised. It felt overwhelming at first, but I reflected on how to involve everyone instead of taking over.

I realised the importance of giving everyone a voice. During the market, I shared the cashier role, so everyone contributed. I learned a lot about financial decisions and how collaboration helps us grow.
