Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

Over the past two weeks, our Grade 5/6 students have been busy learning across all areas of the curriculum.

Last week, a number of students represented our school at the CDSSA Cross Country competition at Hanging Rock. We were so proud of the way they supported each other throughout the event and can honestly say that we had the best ‘cheer squad’ there. Many of those who competed have made it through to the next regional round at St Arnaud.

Congratulations to:

Archie M, Ari C, Kian B, Zoe C, Heidi Revell, Arlo S and Daisy H.

Next week, we have students taking part in the CDSSA Soccer competition and wish them every success.

In Literacy, students have continued their exploration of different poetry styles, identifying and analysing how authors use figurative language to create imagery and mood. We have particularly focused on the use of similes, metaphors and personification, with students working collaboratively to discuss and share the effectiveness of these techniques within poems and the descriptive text Mallee Sky. Students used their knowledge of similes to create poetry linked to our Inquiry Unit - Extreme Weather and as verses for our Mother’s Day cards.

Here are a selection of the poems that were created:

Bushfire by Niamh

The flames roared like a tiger hunting his prey

The tree fell like crashing waves

Wildlife ran like running water

Children's tears hit the ground like rain drumming on the roof

The Ocean by Harvey

Deep sea fish like monsters from your nightmares

Coral reefs die like underwater massacres

Waterspouts fall like a tap of destruction

Octopi swim like aliens in disguise

Jellyfish kill like an invisible dagger

The deep abyss like a black hole swallowing you

Bushfire by Harriet

The flames roared like distressed giants.

The ashes crackled like the scorching sun.

The trees cried like a young child.

The smoke rose like a cry for help.

Storm by Zaine

The lightning crashed like glass shattering

The thunder roared like a lion

The rain fell as fast as a cheetah

The wind howled like a whistle blowing

Bushfires by Eve

The flames roared like thunder clapping in the distance.

The trucks siren screeching like stabbing pains

The firefighters eyes widening like owls

The black forest left ash dark like a tigers soul

Bushfire by Hazel

Flames rear up like a horse in distress.

Smoke rises through the tree tops like a sign of destruction.

The bush turns black like the night sky.

Animals and people screech like a choir off key.

Analysis of language in Mallee Sky.

‘Seasons seem to come and go but no rain falls from the Mallee sky. It is dry forever.’

It explains how they go over the seasons for ages but still no rain falls and they use this to show it is dry forever.  By Albie

‘The wind is too tired to whisper through the eucalyptus trees’ This is personification. I means that there is no wind because it is too hot and dry.  By Archie.

In Maths, we have started a new Statistics unit, where students have created questions to collect specific information and have clarified data as categorical and numerical. Using collected and given data, students have accurately drawn graphs, ensuring they include the key feature of each type of graph. Students have looked at different data sets recorded in tables and graphs and analysed what the data tells us including patterns and trends.

In our Inquiry unit, students have identified their prior knowledge around the topic of Extreme Weather and have developed questions to extend their understanding that will form a basis of our inquiry. Students have also begun researching different extreme weather events that have taken place in Australia.

Student’s first Home Learning tasks are due tomorrow, so please encourage your child to bring in their Home Learning books. They have had 3 weeks to complete the tasks on the Home Learning grid. The next grid of tasks will be handed out and posted on Google Classrooms and Compass on Monday. From this point forward, students will have two weeks to complete the tasks.
