Message from the Principal

It has been another incredibly busy and rewarding week at Balmoral, filled with celebrations, acknowledgements, and opportunities to showcase the outstanding work happening across our school community.

On Monday, we welcomed 26 visiting leaders and educators from Gold Coast schools into our classrooms across both the high school and primary contexts. What stood out most was not only the quality of the learning environments they observed, but the confidence, agency, and maturity of our students in speaking about their learning.

I asked each of the visiting groups to provide affirmations following their classroom observations, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Their reflections reinforced the incredible work happening every day across our school community.

Visitors noted how our students were able to clearly articulate their level of engagement, reflect on where they were in their learning, and identify what they needed to do to move to the next level. They spoke highly of the consistency of the Engagement Accelerator and Engagement Continuum being visible and actively used within classrooms, alongside the strong visibility of learning artefacts and the impressive use of meta-language by students when discussing learning.

What resonated most strongly was the genuine sense of belonging present across classrooms. Visitors repeatedly commented on the trust, connection, and relationships between students and teachers, and how this creates environments where learners feel safe to contribute, reflect, and grow.

Many shared how impressed they were by the maturity of our students and their ability to confidently engage with adult learners in meaningful conversations about learning, engagement, and improvement.

This feedback reflects the collective work of our staff, our intentional culture we continue to build around Agency, Belonging, and Innovation. These are not just words on a page; they are visible in our classrooms, embedded in our practices, and lived by our students each day.

It is a privilege to be asked to share best practice with schools beginning their journey of shifting the language from student behaviour to student engagement. The work occurring at Balmoral is making a difference, and it is being recognised well beyond our school gates.

Some of the affirmations shared by our visitors about our students included:

  • “Thank you so much for answering questions, you all spoke so well, we were very impressed.”
  • “Thank you for welcoming us into your classes. We appreciate your lived experience and the wise words. Your kindness will help our students.”
  • “Thank you, you were all outstanding. You answered with clear confidence and clearly knew what you were talking about.”

This week also saw another highly successful round of Parent Teacher Interviews, with many staff having fully booked schedules across the evening. Thank you to our teachers for the care, professionalism, and commitment shown in partnering with families to support student growth and success.

On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of joining Bridie Doyle, Head of Department Humanities and Languages, and Leanne McFie, Head of Department Middle School, in Sydney for the Entrepreneurial Schools Leaders Workshop. We worked alongside 20 other schools nationally as part of the Entrepreneurial Schools 2026–2027 Project, connecting with leading schools across Australia that are activating student agency and entrepreneurial thinking for impact.

Representing Queensland schools in this space was a proud moment for our team. Standing on Level 35 of 200 George Street overlooking Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge was certainly memorable, but even more powerful was the opportunity to share the innovative work happening at Balmoral.

A particular highlight was Bridie being invited by the organisation to share our practice around the use of Balmoral Champion Students as curriculum designers this was outstanding example of our commitment to authentic student agency and co-design in learning.

Thank you again to our staff, students, and families for continuing to make Balmoral a place where learning, belonging, and innovation thrive.

Regards,
