Year One Team News

with Edan, Claire, Kayleen & Anna

Hello Year One families,

Our classrooms have been abuzz of excitement for swimming recently. We are well and truly into our swimming program at Sweeney’s. We have been so proud of how responsible and respectful our Grade Ones have been so far. There is bound to be a lot of tired students for the remainder of term, so getting enough rest will be very important for them.

Swimming

Just a reminder for our brilliant parent helpers coming along to swimming, for you to please ensure the office has sighted your Working with Children Check and you have completed the online Parent Helper Course. These are both essential for you to be able to attend. The link for the Parent Helper course is available on your Compass home page. Thank you to the parents who have signed up to help each day - we couldn’t do this without you!

Swimming will run every day until Wednesday the 18th of September. Please ensure that you pack your child some extra food on swimming days as they will be hungrier than usual. Please note that lunch orders will be unavailable to 1K on swimming days due to returning to school during lunch time.

Our swimming schedule/out of school times are:

1B: 10.50am - 12.45pm

1D: 11.30am - 1.25pm

1K: 12.10pm - 2.05pm

Year 1 Dinner

The long awaited Year 1 Dinner is not too far away! It will take place on the 13th of November from 4.30-6:30pm. Look out for the event on Compass and notes coming home early next term.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 8-9

Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.4 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Next week we will be learning more about alternative long ‘o’ sounds such as ‘o’ as pony and ‘ow’ as in show. Week 10 will be focusing on the digraphs kn, gn and ch.

Writing: The students will continue working on a narrative story. With lots of guided work and scaffolding, the students will be able to create another wonderful story which they are already excited to share.

Numeracy: We will continue our focus on measurement. In week 9, students will be exploring capacity and how to use informal tools to measure a variety of different containers.

Inquiry:  Our topic this term is around Geography. So far we have ‘travelled’ Australia, England, France, Italy, Egypt and Kenya. During the remainder of the term we will be learning about other countries including their geography, cultures and celebrations.

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: The Willy Kids focus is “Willy Kids are Positive” where students will be learning about facing situations with an open mind and an open heart, always expecting the best outcome. Our focus for Respectful Relationships this term is “Positive Gender Relationships”. In week 9, we will be discussing what “personal space” means as well as how to keep our bodies safe.

Warm regards,

The Grade One Team –  Edan Bacegga (1B), Claire Davies (1D) &

Kayleen Dumic & Anna Swan (1K)
