What's Happening In Grade 1?

The Year 1’s have had a busy Term 3, recently we celebrated Book Week  and had a visit from Mad About Science, where students engaged in a workshop about living things.

Mathematics

During Term 3 in Mathematics, students used a range of concrete materials to help them learn all about addition and subtraction strategies. Our students will now begin to use their strong knowledge of number facts to explore multiplicative thinking.

We also worked on 2D shapes, as well as learning about mass, and comparing the weights and masses of a range of objects.

English

In English students are learning about Information Reports. When reading, students are working on identifying the structure of an information report, their use of nouns, pronouns and descriptive vocabulary.

We will be continuing to extend our students phonemic and phonological awareness skills this term using ‘Sounds-write’ exercises, which has provided a focus on breaking down words into their sounds, blending them together and manipulating sounds to create new words. As we progress through the rest of Term 3 and into Term 4 we are excited to see our students’ knowledge and understanding skyrocket!

Future Focused Learning

During our Future Focused Learning sessions this term our Grade 1s have been curious little Scientists!  They have learnt to identify and describe the external features and basic needs of living things, as well as describing how different places meet the needs of living things. At the beginning of the Term, each class had created their own hairy heads, in an experiment where students can see what plants need to survive. To celebrate this learning experience students will be researching and creating a diorama about their favourite animals at the end of the term.

Students have also been in the process of practising and rehearsing their dances for the production on the 11/09, and we are very excited to see them perform in their costumes for everyone. The grade 1s have been using the theme of biological science in which their songs are based. We can’t wait for you to see them on the night!

Warmest Regards,
