The “I” in ERIC: The Importance of Integrity

In the high school years, teens are figuring out who they are—and integrity is one of the most important qualities they can develop. It means acting with honesty, keeping your word, owning your mistakes, and doing the right thing even when it's inconvenient or uncomfortable. While the world often praises popularity or performance, it’s integrity that quietly shapes a person’s reputation and self-respect.

Parents can help by modelling integrity at home—owning up to errors, speaking respectfully about others and following through on promises. When teens see that character matters more than shortcuts or cover-ups, they learn to value trust over approval. Remind them: real strength isn’t in being perfect—it’s in being accountable.

“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”
