Year 2 Outdoor Learning Program

Year 2 students had a wonderful experience at their very first Outdoor Learning Program!

Heading out to the far end of the oval at Bush School and down to the Gabbiljee Creek, students spent Thursday and Friday last week immersing themselves in nature under the bright sunshine. They explored the creek, catching fish and tadpoles, and tested their creativity by building mini boats to sail in the water. Along the way, they learned about the local flora and gained a deeper appreciation for the plants and trees that surround us.

Students also enjoyed a range of other activities, including science experiments, colouring rocks and threads, and creating story sticks, using imagination to bring stories to life. They even had the chance to leave a lasting contribution to the environment through planting, making their mark on the area for future visitors.

Between hands-on learning and outdoor adventures, it was a memorable introduction to the wonders of the natural world for our Year 2 learners.

Outdoor Learning Meets Science

Last week, living science and outdoor learning came together in a special cross-age experience. Mrs McInnis' Year 3 class shared their knowledge and enthusiasm with their Kindy buddies in the Kindy Outdoor Garden Classroom.

Earlier in Term 2, the Year 3 students deepened their understanding of living science during an Inquiry Experience to Dyoondalup for River School, where they learned from guest presenter Greg Nannup. Building on this learning, they brought their flora knowledge to Kindy, supporting the younger students in identifying and naming the local plants they had worked hard to plant earlier in the year.

The naming and labelling of plants supports botanical literacy and, wherever possible, includes both English and First Nations language. Students also explored the traditional uses of some plants for food and medicine — a rich connection between science, culture and place that beautifully aligned with the themes of Science Week.
