Supporting Your Teen in Responding to Bullying

Bullying doesn’t just affect those directly involved—it also impacts those who witness it. These bystanders play a powerful role in either stopping or unintentionally enabling bullying. Often, bullying continues because it’s not spoken about or reported.

As parents and caregivers, your support is crucial. Here are some practical ways you can help your teen navigate these situations:

  • Create space for open conversation – Encourage your child to talk about what’s happening and listen without judgment.
  • Stay calm and supportive – Your reaction sets the tone. Responding with empathy and reassurance helps your child feel safe.
  • Believe them – When your child shares something difficult, knowing you trust and believe them builds confidence and trust.
  • Reinforce their right to feel safe – Remind your teen that bullying is never okay and they deserve to feel secure and respected.
  • Know the College’s support systems – Make sure your child knows who they can talk to at school and how to access help.
  • Support social connections – Having even one close friend can significantly reduce the impact of bullying.
  • Stay connected with teachers – Reach out to your child’s teacher or Head of House if you have concerns.
  • Ask what they need from you – Empower your child by involving them in decisions about how you can help.

Together, we can foster a culture of respect, safety and support for all students.
