Science Pre-Primary and Year 1

In Pre-Primary and Year One we have been focusing on weather.

The Pre Primary children have been learning about weather language and identifying the weather in the four seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter. We learnt about the rain cycle and also talked about what clothing is appropriate for the different seasons to keep cool, warm and dry.

The Year Ones have been talking about landscapes and the changes that occur outdoors in the different seasons. We looked at the trees and how they change through the seasons. We looked at day and night and how a storm rolls in during a cold front. We also practised being weather reporters which was lots of fun!

Science Years 2 to Year 6

What an awesome Term Three we have had in Science! Our topic this term has been Earth and Space Sciences.

The Year Twos have been investigating Earth’s resources and the different ways we use them. We looked at an important resource, water, and learned that it likes to collect in the lowest points!

Our awesome Year Three students enjoyed learning about how we get night and day! We created our own sundials that helped us tell the time without a watch with the use of a shadow.

Year Fours have been busily learning about how our Earth’s surface changes over time. We learned about weathering, erosion and human impacts on the Earth!

Our Solar System is vast and very interesting! The Year Fives have been studying Earth’s place in the Solar System and created ‘Solar System Belts’ to show this.

Did you know that there are different natural events that impact our Earth’s surface? The Year Sixes do! They discovered that there are many weather and geographical events that can change what our planet looks like.

Art -  Pre-Primary, Year 2, 3, 4 & 6

This term, students across St Helena’s have been exploring the world of art through colour, emotion, and personal expression. From Pre-Primary to Year Six, our young artists have been developing their skills and creativity through hands-on projects that celebrate individuality and imagination.

Pre-Primary: Feeling Through Colour

Our youngest students began their art journey inspired by The Colour Monster, learning how different colours can express emotions. Using painting and collage, they created colourful artworks representing feelings like happiness, sadness, anger, and calm. This project helped students understand that art can be a powerful way to communicate emotions.

Year Two: Paper Mache Snakes

Year Two got creative with paper mache, designing vibrant model snakes. This project focused on shape and colour, as students explored 3D form and decorative patterns. The end results were fun, imaginative pieces that showed growing artistic confidence and creativity.

Years Three and Four: Still Life and Colour Theory

In Year Three, students learned about colour theory, exploring how to blend and shade colours to create different effects. They used these skills in still life artworks that demonstrated a thoughtful use of tone and texture.

Year Four students studied Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers and created their own still life paintings. Inspired by Van Gogh’s use of colour and brushwork, their pieces reflected both technique and emotion.

Year Six: A Lasting Memory on Canvas

Our graduating Year Six students worked on special canvas artworks for their final art exhibition, using the theme Something Beautiful for God. They reflected on meaningful memories and created personal artworks that conveyed messages of love, faith, and gratitude. These pieces are a touching celebration of their journey through primary school and a lasting legacy of their time at St Helena’s.

A Celebration of Creativity

Across the school, our students have embraced the joy of art, learning not just techniques, but how to use their creativity to express who they are and what they feel. We are proud of the beautiful, thoughtful work they have produced and look forward to celebrating their achievements in our upcoming art exhibition.

Art Year 1 and Year 5

YEAR 1

📰 Art Comes Alive: Celebrating Our Romero Britto Lovebirds Project!

The Art Room has been bursting with colour, creativity, and joy as students recently completed a vibrant art project inspired by the iconic Brazilian artist, Romero Britto. Known for his bold patterns, playful themes, and uplifting spirit, Britto’s work served as the perfect muse for our budding artists to explore the theme of love and connection through his famous “Lovebirds” motif.

🎨 A Splash of Pop Art Magic

Throughout the project, students dove into Britto’s unique style, using bright colours, shapes, and expressive lines, each piece became a celebration of individuality and imagination. The classroom transformed into a gallery of joy, with every artwork telling its own story of affection, friendship, and artistic flair.

🧠 Learning Through Art

This wasn’t just about painting- it was a journey through visual storytelling, cultural appreciation, and self-expression. Students learned about Britto’s background, his philosophy of happiness through art, and how visual language can communicate powerful emotions. They also practised key artistic techniques like colour blocking, pattern layering, and composition planning.

💬 Student Reflections

“I loved using all the colours - it made me feel happy,” said one student. Another shared, “Britto’s art is so fun. It made me think about how art can show love in different ways.”

📸 Gallery Showcase

To celebrate the students’ hard work, we hosted our Annual Art Exhibition where families and friends came to view the Lovebirds collection in person. This project reminded us that art isn’t just something we make- it’s something we feel, share, and live!

YEAR 5

📰 Exploring Space Through Art: Classic Cars on the Horizon

Our Year 5 students have been cruising through creativity with a stunning art project centred on space - one of the key elements of visual art. Students took on the challenge of painting classic cars set against expansive landscapes, using artistic techniques to convey depth, distance, and perspective.

🚗 Where Art Meets the Open Road

Each student chose a vintage vehicle as their focal point, placing it within a carefully crafted environment- rolling hills, desert highways, or city skylines. Through clever use of foreground, middle ground, and background, they explored how space can transform a flat canvas into a dynamic scene full of movement and mood.

🎨 Learning the Language of Space

This project was more than just painting- it was a deep dive into how artists use overlapping shapes, diminishing size, perspective and placement to create the illusion of space. Students learned how to guide the viewer’s eye, build visual narratives, and evoke emotion through composition.

💬 Student Voices

“I liked making the car look like it was driving into the distance,” said one student. Another added, “It was cool to see how shadows and size can make things look far away or close.”

📷 Art on Display

During our Annual Art Exhibition, families were invited to come and see how our young artists had turned classic cars into vehicles of imagination and storytelling.

This project reminded us that space isn’t just something we move through- it’s something we can shape, stretch, and fill with meaning. Thanks to our students’ creativity, the journey has been unforgettable.

Pre-Kindy - Little Adventurers

In Pre-Kindy this term, we have been learning about how God made each of us special and unique. We connected this theme to learning about our bodies through creative and hands-on activities.

The children have enjoyed drawing self-portraits and exploring what makes them special, such as their eyes, hair, and skin. We have also been reading book and singing lots of fun action songs to help us learn the names of different body parts and celebrate the wonderful ways God made us.

Alongside this, we have begun introducing pre-writing patterns through the Peggy Lego programme. The children have started by drawing ‘Tall Man’ and ‘Short Man’ vertical lines from top to bottom, which will support them as they learn letter formations in the future.

These patterns are being explored in fun and hands-on ways, with lots of big body movements to build strength and coordination in their large muscles.
