Year 6 Excursion
Exploring Migration Stories at the State Library and WA Museum
Our Year 6 students recently embarked on an enriching excursion to the State Library of Western Australia, where they participated in the “Suitcases: Stories of Migration” workshop.
This engaging program, designed for students in Years 5 and 6, supports the Western Australian HaSS curriculum by exploring the diverse stories of migrants who have made Western Australia their home. Students had the unique opportunity to handle and interpret a range of primary source materials from the State Library’s collections.
Through these resources, they pieced together and retold the journeys of different migrant groups, deepening their understanding of the challenges and contributions of those who have shaped our community.
The excursion continued at the WA Museum, where students visited the Reflections exhibition. Here, they explored the rich tapestry of Western Australian people and their stories, connecting the past with the present. The exhibition encouraged students to reflect on the experiences of individuals and families from a variety of backgrounds, fostering empathy and a greater appreciation for the multicultural nature of our state.
It was a memorable day of hands-on learning, critical thinking, and meaningful discussion about identity, belonging, and the power of storytelling.
