Teaching and Learning Update

School holidays are a wonderful chance for children to rest and recharge—but they’re also a perfect time to keep curious minds busy. Learning doesn’t have to stop when the school bell rings. Here are some fun, hands-on ideas that make learning feel like play:
Reading Adventures
Visit the library and let your child choose a stack of books. Springvale Library has some great activities during the holidays. Click the link to find out more information: https://www.greaterdandenong.vic.gov.au/school-holiday-activities
Start a family 'reading time' where everyone sits together with their book. Children love seeing adults enjoy reading too!
Science Explorers
Try simple experiments at home, like making slime, growing beans in a jar, or creating a vinegar-and-baking-soda volcano.
Go outside and become nature detectives—look at insects with a magnifying glass, collect leaves, or chart the weather for a week.
Maths in Everyday Life
Get children involved in cooking or baking—measuring ingredients is a great way to practise fractions.
Play maths games in the car or at the shops, such as skip counting, adding prices, or guessing change.
Creative Challenges
Encourage children to keep a holiday journal with drawings, photos, or short stories about their day.
Build something from LEGO, cardboard, or recyclables, and have them explain how it works.
The holidays are the perfect time to learn in different ways—through play, discovery, and shared experiences.
