Supporting Mental Health at Athol Road Primary School

At Athol Road Primary School, we know that good mental health is just as important as physical health. When we look after our mental health, we feel confident, motivated, and connected to others, which helps us learn, build friendships, and enjoy life.

As a school, we support wellbeing in many ways. We teach regular emotional awareness lessons, provide mental health training for our staff, and run wellbeing events like R U OK? Day. We also offer a range of wellbeing programs designed to help students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

What is Mental Health?

For children, mental health means:

“Feeling good inside, being able to enjoy life, play, learn new things, and get along with others.”

For adults, mental health is about:

“Our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing — how we think, feel, and behave. Good mental health helps us cope with challenges and enjoy life.”

The School Holidays – A Great Time to Recharge

The upcoming school holidays are the perfect opportunity to support your child’s mental health. A break from the school routine allows time for rest, connection, and fun family activities.

Here are some simple ideas to help children strengthen their mental health during the holidays:

  • Keep a routine: Regular bedtimes and mealtimes help children feel secure.

  • Stay active: Go for walks, ride bikes, or play outdoor games together.

  • Connect with others: Organise playdates or family catch-ups.

  • Practice mindfulness: Try breathing exercises or quiet time together.

  • Create something: Drawing, painting, or building can be calming and fun.

  • Talk about feelings: Encourage your child to share how they are feeling.

  • Do something kind: Helping others can boost mood and confidence.
