Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

Literacy

The past fortnight we have continued working through our hybrid texts, that are a combination of fiction and informational writing. We are incorporating our inquiry knowledge into our narratives, informing our audience on an extreme weather event or climate, through the fictional story we have created, focusing on strengthening our characters and settings with thorough planning.

Numeracy

We are currently still in the midst of our unit on fractions, decimals and percentages. We have had a particular focus on addition and subtraction of fractions, with both common and uncommon denominators. Looking at how we can apply this to real life scenarios, such as the dilemma we explored of Mr Condon painting his walls pink, and needing to mix different amounts of paint left to make the perfect shade!

Inquiry

Continuing on with our extreme weather and climates unit, students are working towards creating a project that consists of three different mini projects, based on three different climates/weather events, informing an audience on each, whilst using their creativity to present them in a range of mediums, such as a news report/film, artwork, survival kit…Keep your eyes peeled for some outcomes!

Brumby incursion

The Year 5/6 students were excited yesterday to welcome Oliver Mullens’ mum Zoe and her Brumby horse Spartan, to Woodend Primary School.

Zoe is participating in the Australian Brumby Challenge which takes totally wild Brumbies, passively trapped as part of an ongoing management program, from the High Country of Victoria and Southern New South Wales. These tough survivors are partnered with professional and non-professional horse trainers for 150 days, culminating in a 4-day finale at Equitana where the Brumbies are taken through their paces in classes designed to showcase their trainers’ ability and the trainability and versatility of each of the Brumbies.

Zoe showed the students some of Spartan’s skills, including laying down on command and standing on a high box. Thanks Zoe & Oliver for sharing Spartan and letting everyone have a pat.
