Student Achievements

Congratulations to Year 7 student Grace Cornish on being selected to be part of the leadership team at the U12 AFLW state competition. While in Geelong, Grace was also honoured with a national sportsmanship award from School Sport Australia.

We are also excited to announce that Grace has been named the U12 Touch Football state captain for the upcoming carnival in Brisbane during Term 4, Week 2. Grace is not only a talented athlete but also a remarkable leader who consistently shows outstanding sportsmanship. Well done, Grace!

SAPSASA Sport

This week Loreto has had SIX footballers running around representing East Adelaide SAPSASA zone in the AFLW State Championships. The competition has been played at West Beach with zones from all over South Australia.

Loreto had the most representatives of any school in our zone: Mia Frearson-Lea, Sophie Adamson, Rudi Fiorillo, Elsa-Marie Kefalianos, Charlotte Holland and Paloma Mezzini. Our girls performed brilliantly, winning 8 out of their 9 matches and finishing as the Division 1 runners up.

Later this term we have Evie White representing East Adelaide in the Cricket State Championships.

Tennis

It is great to see two Loreto teams enter in the IGSSA Friday afternoon competition this term. One team started last Friday and Emerson, Lily, Gazelle and Amelia performed well in their matches against Pulteney. All students won a number of points, and were involved in some brilliant rallies. Serving was difficult in tricky, windy conditions but everyone improved throughout the afternoon.

Well done to Emerson and Lily who were Loreto’s first winners in their doubles fixture.

Our other tennis team starts this week.

Netball

Loreto has nine Friday night netball teams taking the court this summer in the Friday night Eastern Districts Netball Association competition.

A very excited Year 2 Pink team took the court for the first time last week and played brilliantly, running out winners 8-5. Our Year 2 Green team starts this week. The teams have had a few trainings, learning the rules and positions and starting to develop some teamwork. Year 4s Amelia O and Colette C taught the Year 2s the Loreto Team Cheer at a recent training and the girls look forward to belting it out with gusto during the season!

Volleyball

Interest in volleyball has been growing at Loreto. After an excellent winter season from the Loreto Diggers, we have been able to expand to two teams in Term 4. Both teams started the summer season last Friday and started with wins. Good luck to our Year 6 Blue and Year 4/5 Gold teams this afternoon!

Athletics

Our Thursday afternoon athletics sessions have now finished for 2024. Students have been rotating through long jump, high jump, discus, shot put, sprints and long-distance events over the year, culminating in our LORETOlympics event last night. A number of personal bests were recorded and well done to our medal winners:

Touch Football

Loreto has had a great start to the new Tuesday afternoon competition with our teams scoring a number of tries and having lots of fun.

Our skills are developing well, and the next stage is working on the team structure and tactical elements:

  • Attacking: Using the whole field, spreading the defence to create holes, finding space and not clustering together
  • Defending: Keeping shape, shutting down space quickly, defending as a line, no gaps

Coming up with team names has been a hot topic of discussion. Our teams are wearing coloured bibs but some of my ideas have been shot down in flames. Can you improve on these?

Year 6 Blue – The Smurfs

Year 5 Yellow – Barney Bananas (this suggestion went down like a lead balloon)

Year 4 Green – Incredible Hulks

Our Year 3 numbers have gone through the roof, and we now have two teams:

Year 3 Red – Angry Birds

Year 3 Black – Dark Knights

Please email your suggestions through!

Performing Arts

The recent Catholic Schools Music Festival showcased an incredible array of talent, bringing together 1,800 students from 83 Catholic schools across South Australia to celebrate their musical abilities. Among the standout performers were 52 of our Year 6 students, who participated as part of the mass choir. Their voices resonated beautifully throughout the event, demonstrating not only their hard work and dedication but also the joy of collaborative music-making. Under the guidance of their teachers, the students practiced extensively throughout the first half of the year, resulting in a performance that captivated the audience and exemplified the spirit of our Loreto community.

In addition to the mass choir, several of our senior students featured in specialised ensembles and as support acts throughout the week that further highlighted their individual talents. Gracie and Charlie shone brightly in the festival strings ensemble. Senior Vocal Ensemble 1, which featured a mix of our most talented vocalists, delivered a stunning rendition of Nature Boy, and Holly and Bella also made a remarkable impression with their performance of Voila, accompanied by Gracie, Charlie, Lanah, and Ms. Baldwin. All these students not only showcased their vocal abilities but also their capability to work as an ensemble to deliver an enthralling performance.

Overall, the Catholic Schools Music Festival was a resounding success. This experience not only fostered a love for music among the students but also reinforced the values of teamwork and dedication. The festival truly celebrated the joy of music within our Catholic school community, leaving lasting memories for all who participated.
