Learn what opportunities our students have been taking on

Celebrating Sister Jacinta

At the end of Term 3, we gathered for a special occasion, to celebrate Sister Jacinta's Platinum Jubilee as a Sister of St Brigid, and her forthcoming 90th birthday. Year 12 student leaders, Jorja Clode and Ulani Hobbs, interviewed Sister Jacinta about her life growing up in Murtoa during war-time, and her journey to becoming a Sister of St Brigid.

Sister Jacinta has been a vital part of our Catholic schools here in Horsham, leaving an everlasting impact at both St Brigid’s College and Ss Michael and John’s Primary School. Ulani and Sean of St Brigid's, and SMJ Horsham School Captains, Halle and Larry, presented Sister Jacinta with beautiful flowers on behalf of our school communities.

What's on at School

During the last week of term, we welcomed Ron Marks to share stories and experiences with our Year 8 students. Ron is an elder from the community and has a passion for sharing his knowledge and experiences with non-First Nations people. He encourages people to get a better understanding of our local area and the connections that First Nations people have with the land. We appreciate that Ron took the time to come and teach our students.

"It was a great visit from Uncle Ron and interesting learning about Aboriginal culture. The most interesting thing I learnt today was finding out that you can use leaves to make music and seeing the football made out of possum skin. The most enjoyable part was learning about different games and objects, because it is very different from what we play and use."

Congratulations!

Recently the Catholic education community in Victoria came together to recognise and celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students graduating from Year 12 this year. Congratulations to St Brigid's College Year 12 student, Phoenix McKinnon, who attended the graduation held at the Catholic Leadership Centre in Melbourne.

Careers in the Defence Force Experience

This week students had the opportunity to participate in the 'Discover Your Future with the Australian Defence Force' activity being held at the James Lawson Army Depot in Horsham. Students undertook a number of activities focusing on teamwork, problem solving, and communication: important skills needed as a Defence member. They also looked over vehicles from the 2nd Force Support Battalion, and had the opportunity to inspect weapons and personal protective equipment. Students had conversations and listened to talks from Defence members to learn about the career paths in the Australian Army. The students who attended thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on, immersive experience, and were surprised about the variety of roles within the Army. It was great for the students to meet with former St Brigid's College student, Riley Timms, and hear about his experience and pathway from secondary school, to the Australian Army.

All the best!

All the best to Year 8 student Hannah Arnup with her performance in the Stawell Performing Arts Company's musical Urinetown.

We wish all the best to students from St Brigids College and SMJ for their remaining performances in Horsham Art's Councils, The Pirates of Panzance.
