Year 1 English

Reading

This term, Year 1 students have been diligently practising their skills in locating key information within both fiction and nonfiction texts. They have engaged in independent and partner activities to explore these texts, which has helped them gain a clearer understanding of the main ideas presented.

The students demonstrated confidence in using the contents page of their nonfiction books to navigate and identify important information throughout various sections of their texts. This skill will strongly support their comprehension/understanding of the text they are reading.

Guided Reading is in Full Swing!

Guided Reading is well underway in our classrooms! Each student has been assigned to a reading group, and they meet with the teacher once a week. Each group is focused on different learning goals, allowing for targeted support.

We encourage you to ask your child about their Guided Reading group each week. This is a great opportunity for them to share what they have learned and the skills they are currently developing. Thank you for your continued support in fostering their love for reading!

Year 1 Explores Phonemes: /oo/ and /ew/

This week, Year 1 students have been focusing on the phoneme /oo/ and /ew/, as in "boot." In their investigation of words containing these sounds, students challenged themselves to deepen their understanding of rhyming words by creating a rhyming poem using some of their spelling words with /oo/ and /ew/.

Here are a few examples of the students’ creativity as they completed their Sound Waves challenge!
