2024 Valedictory Speech

I think I speak on behalf of a number of people when I say there were times, I thought this night would never come. From the minute you’re given your summer holiday homework at the closing of year 11, the finish line is a continuous thought that rarely leaves your mind. It’s the fuel that keeps you going during that stress inducing week compiled of 4 sacs or the late night study sessions spent frantically completing the set homework. And now it’s here.

Initially I want to congratulate the graduating class of 2024 on all of our efforts this year. We can all finally take a breath and savour this moment. I want to specifically share the pride I have in my classmates who have already taken the momentous step into the workforce, and adult life itself.

It’s true what they say about year 12, it does fly by. 1 minute you’re being asked “what do you want to do when you leave school?” before your first class even begins, and the next minute exams are done, and it feels as though that decision must be instantly made.

Although despite what we do, nothing would be possible without those around us. On behalf of my classmates, I want to call on our incredible families who make the selfless sacrifices to ensure we survive the year and continuously allow us to complain about the long bus trips to VET and the multiple lectures we have to sit through. Additionally, I’d like to share the gratitude we have for our teachers. I can safely say through the hardships of VCE you’ll turn to your teachers for a sense of comfort to guide you through the stress. We simply would not have been able to get through the year without your ever-growing support and care for us.

For the class of 2025 I encourage you to believe in yourselves and your abilities. Without a doubt year 12 is a long and stressful year, there will be days where motivation is at an all-time low, but as each and every valedictorian always says, you’ll be back in this room before you know it. So, savour your last camp, soak in the impromptu conversations that are held in the common room and cherish the special moments you’ll share as a class. And most importantly use each other for support. It’s okay to admit you’re overwhelmed. It’s okay to take a break. And it’s absolutely okay to continue to have a social life and live.

Whether you’re going into year 12 or just finishing year 6 trust me when I say, don’t take it for granted. Don’t continue to wish for time to go faster. As eager as I was for this year to come to an end, I wish nothing more but to pause time for just a minute to take it all in and reminisce on the year that was.

Thank you.
