Spotlight on Learning - Room 6

This term, Room 6 has started their English learning with a poetry unit where we have been exploring different types of poems, inspired by our reading of ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ by Roald Dahl. We started by learning about couplets, which are poems made up of two lines that rhyme and often have the same rhythm. We discussed how couplets are used to tell short, sharp ideas or feelings, just like in ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ when the characters express their thoughts in brief, memorable ways. Students have created their own couplets, focusing on topics from the book, such as the cleverness of Mr. Fox or the humorous antics of the farmers.

Next, we moved on to haikus. Haikus are a type of traditional Japanese poetry that has three lines with a specific syllable pattern: five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third. Haikus usually focus on nature, but we also connected them to our reading, writing haikus inspired by the setting and events in ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’, like the cheekiness of Mr. Fox or the tense moments in the farmers' hunt for Mr. Fox.

Over the next few weeks, students will be learning about limericks and acrostic poems to finalise our poetry unit. Students have worked hard to create their own couplets and haikus, and you can see their examples displayed below. Their poems show their creativity and understanding of how different forms of poetry can convey various emotions and ideas. We encourage you to take a look at their wonderful work!
