Around Our School
isea icare News
After attending the term 3 Workshop at Narambi Wetlands and Mornington Beach, where the focus was on litter and its impact on the environment, the isea icare ambassadors were enthusiastic to involve the whole school in helping reduce the rubbish that ends up in our oceans.
At the excursion, the ambassadors learnt about a way that the St Brendan's community could work together to help reduce the amount of plastic thrown away and it’s a charity called LIDS4KIDS.
Each class has been asked to collect the lids of milk containers, juice containers, soft drink bottles, squeeze yoghurt lids and even sushi soy sauce lids. If you’re not sure if a lid can be recycled, send it to school and we will decide. The plastic lids are used to make many things such as playground equipment, park benches, clipboards, combs and prosthetic hands for children.
Every two weeks, the Green Team representatives from each class will count the lids and bring them to Mrs Coggin.
At each assembly, we will inform the school of the class with the most lids.
The class with the most lids will be awarded the LIDS4KIDS Legends trophy to have in their classroom for the following fortnight, as well as a prize for each class member.
Start collecting and remember that every lid you collect is one less lid in landfill and will go to help kids!
First Aid Training - St John's Ambulance
On Monday, St Brendan's was delighted to welcome Sam, Sam, and Jesse from St John's Australia, who provided students with essential First Aid education and guidance on responding to emergencies. The students explored key elements of the DRSABCD acronym and practised making emergency calls, including dialing 000, providing their home address, and sharing critical information with responders.
Ollie (FR) - If someone gets hurts off the monkey bars, you should shout out their name. If they don't wake up, you have to pinch their shoulders. If they don't wake up then you have to get closer to see if they're awake and then you should call the paramedics. I loved the paramedic being asleep for us to practise on him.
Jewel (1/2GH) - I learnt how you should check for a response from someone who is unconscious. If you squeeze on their shoulders, it will wake someone who is just sleeping but you won't get hurt.
Lexi (3/4V) - It was great to see the first aid responder demonstrating the recovery position because now I know how to do it.
Archer (5/6W) - We learnt how to save someone's life through following the correct response order DRSABCD. It was useful to learn the information if we ever need to use it.

St John’s Ambulance came and taught 3/4M about what to do if something dangerous happens. Example: Uncle Frank was baking chocolate chip cookies while we were upstairs playing. After 2 hours we went downstairs. We saw Uncle Frank lying on the floor, not moving. We saw broken glass, water, sharp knives, fire, and the stove was still on!
First, we looked at our DRS ABCD and eliminated any dangers by sweeping the glass, wiping the water off the ground, carefully putting away the sharp knives, turning the stove off and then once we knew we were safe we called Emergency from Uncle Frank’s phone. Did you know that you can do this without even knowing the password just by swiping up with your finger?
Next we learned how to put someone into the recovery position if they are unconscious but still breathing. It is very important to keep talking to the phone operator while waiting for the ambulance to arrive…
DO NOT HANG UP UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD!
We hope this doesn't happen, but if it does then we will be prepared.
