Year 11 Exam Week

Dear Year 11 Parents

Throughout Week 8, all Year 11 students will complete their Semester 1 exams and final projects. The week receives an alternate timetable to support students completing major assignments and to enable adequate at-home revision time.

The exam process is an opportunity for three educational outcomes:

  1. Revising the knowledge and skills students have learned throughout the semester will further encourage them to store this content in long-term memory.
  2.  Exams provide a valid snapshot of what students have learnt over an extended period of time.
  3.  The exam week allows students to practise revising for test conditions similar to what is expected in Year 12 and Tertiary studies.

Whilst exams do not count towards the Stage 1 SACE scores, they are reported as part of our school report, released via SEQTA engage. I would like to emphasise the need for efficient revision and learning. Teachers are training students to use evidence-informed strategies in the classroom and are assigning revision homework, often using strategies presented in the table in the attached letter

Thank you for working in partnership with the school in helping our young people achieve their potential.

Director of Teaching and Learning 7-12

Year 10 Wellbeing Day

Last Thursday, Year 10 students enjoyed an exciting Wellbeing Day filled with adventure and camaraderie. They participated in a variety of activities, including an adventure climb, ice skating, and a communal lunch, all designed to promote wellbeing, teamwork, and social connection.

The day kicked off with a thrilling adventure climb, where students challenged themselves to scale various obstacle courses at various heights. It was fantastic to see everyone encouraging each other, fostering a spirit of teamwork and perseverance.

After a morning of physical exertion, students enjoyed community time and shared a meal at Glenelg. This break allowed them to relax, recharge, and socialise, strengthening friendships and building new connections.

Next, students hit the ice rink for some fun-filled ice skating. Laughter and joy echoed throughout the rink as students, many of whom were skating for the first time, supported each other in staying balanced and enjoying the activity.

The Year 10 Wellbeing Day was a resounding success, beautifully illustrating the essence of community and togetherness. Through these activities students strengthened their bonds with one another. The shared experiences and collective support echoed the spirit of Hebrews 10:24-25, where we are called to encourage and uplift each other. The day's events fostered a sense of unity and mutual care, reminding us that in our community, we thrive not just as individuals but as a cohesive, supportive family.

As we continue to build on these foundations, we look forward to more opportunities that bring us closer together and nurture the well-being of every student.

Year 9 Materials Technology

In Year 9 Materials Technology, students have created CO2 dragsters out of timber.  They grew their understanding of engineering by considering the impact of friction, aerodynamics, and weight while learning the design process and working with timber. Computer-aided Design (CAD) software was used to create a 3D render of their final design before they made them in the workshop.

Then there was race day! Each class raced head-to-head to see who would win. Congratulations to Brendan and Aiden M , who took out the championship rounds for each class!

Year 9 City Excursion

Year 9 students enjoyed a day out in the city!

They visited WestCare to find out how Baptist Care provides for 'those of our community who are experiencing homelessness and social isolation with a safe space and essentials such as meals, shower and laundry facilities and overnight accommodation during extreme weather events.'

The students then had the lunch of their choice at the Central Market and completed the day with an Escape Room at Rundle Mall.

A great day of compassion, learning and fun.

Year 8 Geography Excursion

As Adelaide’s population grows and available housing land shrinks, the future of Adelaide’s urban growth is dependent on carefully planned strategies. For our city to become more liveable, competitive and sustainable, one focus of urban planners is to contain our urban footprint and build in established urban areas.

In May, two Year 8 Geography classes visited neighbourhoods at Tonsley Village and Glenside to observe contemporary examples of urban infill and assess how closely the developments align with the State Government’s plans for Adelaide’s long-term growth. Students met with development managers overseeing projects at Glenside to learn about innovative environmental features of the housing and how property developers cater to a growing and ageing population.

Year 8 Wellbeing Day - Movies and Ten-pin Bowling

Year 8 students experienced a delightful blend of entertainment and friendly competition.

The Day commenced with a visit to the cinemas to watch the movie 'If'. This thought-provoking film offered a shared cinematic experience that was both enjoyable and reflective.

Transitioning from the movie theatre to the Ten-Pin Bowling Alley, students engaged in spirited games, cheering each other on and celebrating strikes and spares.

This well-rounded day of activities provided a perfect balance of relaxation and social interaction, contributing to the student's overall wellbeing and sense of community.

Year 7-8 Director

Year 7 Wellbeing Day - The Beachouse

Year 7 students enjoyed an outing to The Beachouse, Glenelg, for their Wellbeing Day. This much-anticipated event fostered social connections and provided a break from the classroom.

The day was filled with laughter and excitement as the students explored a variety of attractions, including rides, arcade games and the highlight, water slides!

Students enjoyed this opportunity to unwind and have fun, strengthening friendships and a positive school community.

South Plympton students visit Brooklyn Park

Our Brooklyn Park campus was alive with giggles and fun as our Secondary students visited from South Plympton!

Each student was partnered up with a buddy, and there were games of 'Stuck in the Mud' and cricket, as well as activities such as dressing up and drawing your buddy.

The gasps of amazement as the younger students looked up at the towering Secondary Students wearing the same uniforms made the trip very worth it!

Round 3 of Inter-house Competitions

The inter-house competitions have always been a highlight of an Emmaus student’s experience at the College. The competition this term has welcomed hundreds of students from Year 7 to 12 with the opportunity to compete in friendly netball tournaments during lunch times. Students from all sporting backgrounds and skill levels gathered to show off their netball skills and attempt to lead their team to victory. Those who are not as gifted with athletic abilities, such as myself, have had the chance to spectate the nail-bitingly close games from the sidelines, cheering on their friends and house.

The Year 7-9 game this week ended with a score of 9-9, resulting in two minutes of extra time. As the timer started, Ruby Team brought the score to 10-9 with Emerald Team quickly settling the scores back to even with under one minute left. The 7-9 Ruby team dug deep into their athletic abilities, which led to their first win of the term.

When it came to the Year 10-12 netball game, Ruby showed an exceptional demonstration of athleticism and defence with the game ending in 21-10. Congratulations Ruby House!

We look forward to many more inter-house competitions in the coming weeks and to seeing who will win the all-important grand finale.
