Grade 1 and 2 News

Term 2, Week 6

Key Dates & Reminders:

  • Home Reading: We encourage families to completing their child's reader with them 4 nights of the week for between 5 - 20 minutes. We also ask that the reading is recorded in the students yellow reading diary when it is completed. We recognise that families are often busy, but the extra practise for students is very supportive in helping to consolidate reading skills. The books students bring home should never be difficult, but rather should allow them to practise and reinforce the skills learnt in class.
  • Drink Bottles: We ask that students please have a drink bottle with them in class each day  - it is important for us to limit interruptions to learning time where possible.
  • Hats: We are a proud SunSmart school, however once we reach May it is no longer a necessity for students to have their hat on to play. We do still encourage students to where their hats when and where it is appropriate.

What we have been up to...

Sustainability - Limiting the use of Plastic

We recently read the book titled 'A Bird and a Bag'. The story line followed a bird who became entangled in a plastic bag and needed to be rescued by someone at the beach. Students then watched an episode of BTN (Behind the News) learning about the use of plastic and its effects on the environment. In pairs or small groups students designed a poster encouraging limited use or re-use of plastics.

The Great Rabbit Chase

During week 5, the students enjoyed listening to the story 'The Great Rabbit Chase'. In this book Freya Blackwood's use of adjectives to describe the character provided an excellent mentor text for us to recognise the use of description in writing - which we have been practising in our Writing lessons. Below students can be seen creating bunnies which they then wrote creative sentences about - focusing on character description.

Education Week - Open Afternoon

Thank you to the many family and friends who visited our classrooms on Friday afternoon. The students enjoyed the opportunity to make and test their paper aeroplanes. Each class entered their own classroom champion/s against the other 1/2 grades to see who created the plane which could fly the furthest. Nash and Hudson from 1/2 Todeschini were crowned the overall 1/2 champions!
