Term 2, Week 6

Milo's Birthday Party - TOMORROW!

We are looking forward to celebrating Milo's Birthday, tomorrow

We invite our Prep students to choose their favourite character from the book to dress up as. Please try and create a costume from what you already have at home. We ask that the chosen costume represents a character from the story... no Elsa or Bluey costumes this time!

Please look at the picture below with your child for some inspiration:

What we've been up to in Prep!

In Topic, we built the bridge from 'The Billy Goats Gruff'. Thank you for collecting recycled materials for us, we were able to have so much fun designing and creating bridges with your generous contributions! We loved being able to share our creations with you during our open afternoon.

This week, we have been learning about all things Milo's Birthday Surprise related! We have made paper planes for Peter the Penguin and we will be making Party Hats for Milo's party. We had lots of fun making the planes and then seeing how far they would fly!

This week in PE, the Preps were lucky enough to participate in a Tennis Clinic run by Jim Widdowson at the Spring Gully Tennis Courts. They will also be doing this next week in PE. Everyone has had a great start so far!

Upcoming Learning

Literacy

We have now learnt the most common sound that each letter of the alphabet makes! We will spend the following weeks revising these sounds and extending our learning to reading words with 4 sounds. To begin this learning, Prep children will add 's' to the end of words to make a plural. In some words, the 's' can make a /z/ sound (like in bugs and pans), but we will learn to always write an 's'. Over the next two weeks we will be reading 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. We will be learning the Heart Words 'for' and 'her'.

Mathematics

In weeks 7 and 8, we will be revising capacity and mass and learning about length. This includes language such as - full, empty, half full, heavy, light, more, less, long, longest, short and shorter. Our measurement lessons have been lots of fun and Prep children are enjoying the hands on nature of these lessons. An opportunity to support this learning at home is to enjoying cooking together and talk about all the ways we use measurement during the process.

Topic

In week 7, we are going to continue exploring different construction materials and build a bed for Goldilocks that is 'just right!'. We are also going to choose an appropriate material to design a picnic blanket for the characters to enjoy a picnic together on.

During week 8, Prep children are going to plant 'magic beans' to grow a beanstalk and track the exciting growth and germination stages. We are really looking forward to this!

Our Respectful Relationships for the following fortnight are, 'Can everyone play?' and 'Friendly or unfriendly decisions?'

Australian Early Development Census (AEDC): Building a national picture of child health

In Week 8 and 9, our school, along with thousands of others across the country, will participate in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).

The AEDC is a teacher-completed census (similar to a questionnaire) which provides a comprehensive picture of how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school. The AEDC is an Australian Government Initiative and is completed nationally every three years.

Children don’t miss any class time while the AEDC is completed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information. The data collected through the AEDC is used by schools, communities and governments to better understand children and families’ needs, and identify the services, resources and support they need.

AEDC data is reported at a school, community, state/territory and national level. AEDC results for individual children are not reported and the AEDC is not used as an individual diagnostic tool. Some teachers have found that completing the AEDC made them more aware of the needs of individual children and their class, and that the data was useful for planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing programs.

Participation in the AEDC is voluntary, however the AEDC relies on all schools with children in their first year of full-time school participating in the collection. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
