Careers Update

Work Experience

In Year 10, students will undertake the Work Experience Program. It is expected that all Year 10 students will participate in this 5-day program. All work experience arrangement forms should have been returned to the Careers Team by Thursday the 13th of June.

The dates of the Work Experience Program are Monday 29th July to Friday 2nd August (inclusive).

Work experience is a one-week placement where students will gain insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located. It provides students with a valuable opportunity to develop employability skills, explore possible career options, understand employer expectations, and increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence, and self-confidence.

Work experience students are with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities which require extensive training or expertise.

Students are required to source their own work experience placement. Doing this provides students with a wonderful opportunity to develop their communication skills, initiative and ‘real world’ experiences. Should students have any issues or difficulties in gaining a work experience placement they can be supported through this by teachers and careers staff.

We look forward to seeing our Year 10 students out and about in the working world in Term 3.

Inspiring Careers Health Camp

A few lucky Year 12 students attended the ‘Inspiring Careers in Health’ Camp at the end of May. The camp was designed to help students explore future careers in medicine, allied health, sports science, nursing and/or midwifery. The two-day camp was hosted by Federation University and TAFE Gippsland which included hands on activities, presentations by University and TAFE students and staff, and learning about available careers. Students also experienced an ‘Inspiring Health Careers’ dinner to meet health professionals from a diverse range of health-related careers and organisations. One of Lowanna College’s past students, Leila Raymond, was a guest speaker, who spoke about her journey and what life’s like as a 4th year Physiotherapy student. It was great hearing Leila’s passionate and inspiring presentation!

Students also participated in an ‘Industry Day’, attending Heritage Manor Aged Care and Maryvale Private Hospital. At Heritage Manor students were given a tour of the facility, meeting some residents and hearing about careers within the aged care industry. At Maryvale Private Hospital students participated in a group of activities such as assessing patients (with medical mannequins), blood pressure, listening to patients' pulse, performing CPR and undertaking hospital level hand washing. The students really enjoyed the ‘hands on’ activities and found it, along with the camp, very beneficial for their future planning. A big thank you to the Baw Baw LLEN who coordinated this camp.

What is the USI?

You may have heard of the Unique Student Identifier – or USI. It’s made up of ten letters and numbers and is your education number for life. All students doing nationally recognised training, be it a VET in Schools course, First Aid training, or applying to university, must have a USI.

Why do I need a USI?

Without a USI, you won’t be able to access Commonwealth supported places or HELP loans, and you won’t receive your statement of attainment, qualification, or award upon completion of your studies.

Who should get a USI?

If you’re considering a VET in Schools course for next year or if you’re in Year 12 and thinking about further education, create your USI without delay!

How do I get a USI?

The process is simple and can be completed in less than five minutes using one form of identification, such as a birth certificate or driver’s license.

I’ve forgotten my USI.

If you’ve already created a USI but have forgotten your details, you can easily find your USI by following a few simple steps.

Using your USI.

A USI also empowers you to take ownership of your education and training journey. With a USI, you can access your VET outcomes online in the form of an authenticated USI VET transcript.

Your VET transcript can be used:

as a credit transfer or to demonstrate pre-requisites for further training, as a backup if the original documentation is lost and cannot be replaced, to provide qualifications to employers and licensing bodies to reduce unnecessary retraining that can result from lost credentials.
