Mathematics

Term 2 has begun, and before we know it, exam season will be here. Teachers and students are already in the process of getting ready for the impending exams. We are constantly hearing terms like "revision" and "practice tests".

Students will start organising their courses for the following year soon after the exams. To ensure that our students understand the various mathematics courses available and which pathway is best for them, teaching staff and Year 12 leaders kindly devote their time to mentoring our students. The highlight of our subject selection process this year is the Mathematics selection in Year 10. We will now be offering VCE General Mathematics Units 3 and 4 to our top Year 10 students for 2025 for the first time at Mazenod College.

This year has seen our top students in various year levels have an individualised maths pathway to suit their skills and align with their long-term goals. We are proud to offer year 9 Enhancement Mathetmatics to three of our current Year 8 students and Units 1& 2 Mathematics Methods to one of our Year 10 Enhancement students, after a rigorous selection process. These advanced pathways will provide deep mathematical knowledge to students wanting to maximise their ATAR and pursue maths-related fields in the future.

This term, our unior Enhancement students in Years 7 and 8 are investigating advanced algebra, giving them a taste of a more advanced level of mathematics. They have been practicing solving literal equations as well as factoring and expanding algebraic expressions, including fractions. The chance to experience the material that they would have normally learned in Year 10 is greatly appreciated by the students.

Algorithms and pseudocode have been explored by our Year 11 and 12 Methods and Specialist Mathematics students this term. This would help to prepare them for the latest VCE curriculum as well as for a future where technology and coding will play a major role.

We are still offering math homework sessions this year, which take place on Wednesday and Thursday after school. It's also wonderful to see our Year 12 students use the Study Hall, which offers an appropriate environment for our senior students to study without distractions.

We wish every student taking examinations this term the best of luck!
