HUMANITIES HIGHLIGHTS FROM YEAR 8

By Evie B (Year 8 Student)

In Humanities classes throughout Term 1, Year 8 students focused on Ancient History, more specifically the Aztec era and there was much to learn about the historical culture of this ancient civilization.

As part of the unit we were required to create an artefact from this time period. These could either include weapons such as knives, swords, shields, the construction of a diorama or model, or even part of the Aztecs traditional costume. Once complete, they would go on to be displayed in the DC foyer.

This assignment allowed me to showcase the sewing skills I’ve learnt over the years in order to create the headdress I was wanting to replicate and a combination of techniques were used to achieve this. I initially transferred the design onto a simple piece of white cotton fabric and the use of fabric paints created the base. From there, I moved onto free motion quilting, which provided all the detailing to define the patterned areas. Next, I assembled the crown by using both machine and hand sewing, followed by attaching the feathers and voila! With plenty of hard work, it was really satisfying seeing this piece come to life and I'm really proud of myself with how it turned out.

Term 2 has seen students continuing their learning on Ancient History, this time focusing on Medieval Times. To kick off this unit we had the opportunity to travel back to medieval times through the participation of an incursion. This took place in week two and we were also encouraged to wear medieval themed costumes for the day. Students were able to try their hand at wearing traditional armour and clothing, archery, enjoying the sounds of historical instruments and playing a variety of games from the era. Overall, it was such a great day and a wonderful opportunity to engage in this unit of study.
