ROAD SAFETY VISIT: THINGLE TOODLE'S BIRTHDAY ADVENTURE!

BY KIRSTY MEESE (KINDER DIRECTOR)

For the last few weeks, we've been preparing for a visit from Thingle Toodle. Thingle Toodle is a "Starting Out Safely" road safety mascot. After weeks of wondering and thinking, this week Thingle Toodle finally visited us! The questions we were most curious about Thingle Toodle were: would it be real, would it be a toy, is it a girl or a boy, would it speak?

During our visit we learn that Thingle Toodle is a girl and that today she was turning four and that we were invited to her surprise birthday. She was having a little trouble learning how cross the road, and Dr Erica Speriment asked if we might be up to the challenge to help her - and we were!!

We learnt that to cross a road you first have to hold an adult's hand, then before you cross you need to stop (which we played a game where we practiced stopping). Next we rehearsed how to look, Dr E. Speriment showed us her new invention "look all around glasses" to demonstrate how to look around before we cross a road. Then Dr E. Speriment showed us her listening invention, a trumpet type thing that she held to her ear to help her listen for vehicles and dangers when crossing the road. Lastly we had to put all the information together to decide when it is time to safely cross a road.

Finally it was time for Thingle Toodle to arrive. We were in awe of Thingle Toodle and really hoped that she'd share her cake with us, but sadly the cake was made of all the things that possums like to eat (a pretend cake) and she wasn't allowed to share.

I think the real highlight for the children was how much fun the road safety visit was and one of the student summarised their experience perfectly in this quote:

"I didn't think you were coming to play, I thought you were coming to teach us!"

FUNDRAISING FUN

BY PETER CLIFFE (PRINCIPAL)

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Thailand Mission Trip Fundraiser. Whether you bought a sausage, wore free dress, or contributed in any other way, with everyone’s combined efforts - we successfully raised nearly $2,500 profit.

The funds raised will aid our Year 12 students attending the trip, helping them to make a meaningful impact during their time in Thailand.

Thank you once again to all the students, parents, and staff who made this possible.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING IN THE DC

The Discovery Centre celebrated 'National Simultaneous Storytime' and the Scholastic Book Fair in May. The feature book for this years' Storytime was 'Bowerbird Blues' by Aura Parker, so the library was decorated in blue and featured a giant Satin bowerbird hanging from the ceiling. More than sixty children turned up at 11am on Wednesday May 22 to hear four Grade 5 students bring the story to life in a beautiful reading.

Thank you to our Library Leaders for their help in making decorations. Thank you, too, to parents and children who supported our Scholastic Book Fair. Every purchase earned us credits to spend on new books for our library!
