Wellbeing Matters

Stronger Smarter

After exploring and building upon our connections with others last term, our focus is directed on self this term.

The question who am I, is complex question with students participating in various activities across the term to aid them in identifying a positive sense of self.

So far this term students have watched video clips, been shown a visual representation of priorities in our daily lives using rocks, pebbles and sand and most recently have identified important people, pastimes and tasks unique to the individual.

Seasons for Growth

The Seasons for Growth participants have continued to explore the changes in the seasons and how they relate to our feelings and our emotions especially when we experience change and loss.

Students enjoyed going for a walk around the school to fully explore the changes in nature, noticing colour and texture changes in the school environment. The leaf tower was a great bonus activity enjoyed by all.

In our most recent session we started to discuss Winter and how temperature drops can alter our emotions. But like all seasons Winter doesn’t last forever, nor do our low moods and feelings.

The growth in this group so far has been amazing to witness and I look forward to the rest of our sessions ahead.

Student Support Officer News

Our students in secondary this week were introduced to our school counsellor Kristy Barber. Kristy will be at Boorowa Central School every Wednesday. Secondary students can self refer to Kristy by using the school counsellor self referral form  and placing it in the counsellors mail box in the library.

Primary students can be referred by their class teachers with parental consent. Welcome Kristy from everyone at BCS.

How can the Student Support Officer help you and your child?

As the SSO at Boorowa Central School I am here to help you with a wide range of things.

My role involves working with the school community, including students, parents, and school staff, as well as community organisations and the wider community, to support student well-being.

My goal as an SSO is to work alongside students to promote safety, resilience and pro-social behaviours, as well as being a point of call for students to seek advice, guidance, and support.

It comprises working with students one on one, and in small groups.

Students can self-refer to me from Year 4 onwards or may be referred by the Learning Support Team / Wellbeing team, Year Advisers, Head Teachers, Deputy Principal and Principal.

A student might be referred to me for support in areas such as bullying, developing self-esteem, resilience, conflict resolution and coping skills, peer mediation or to be connected to local external support and youth services. Some of these services may include Headspace, Kids Helpline or specialist health professionals.

If your child indicates that they may be struggling you may like to engage with your GP. You can also seek support from the Parent Line on 1300 1300 52.

 Alternatively, you can access the services below by phone or online;

NSW Mental Health Access Line 1800 011 511- staffed by mental health professionals, the line gives NSW residents access to expert mental health advice, support and referrals for people dealing with a mental health problem and their families and carers.

Kids Helpline is Australia’s only free 24/7 confidential and private counselling service specifically for children and young people aged 5 to 25. Call 1800 55 1800.

Be safe and reach out for support if needed.
