LEVEL ONE NEWS

In Mathematics level one has been exploring and studying 2D shapes. We have examined a variety of shapes and can sort them into groups using their different attributes. We learned that shapes can be regular or irregular, and that some shapes have special names. We investigated shapes in the real world, and used them to create patterns and pictures by rotating, reflecting and translating them. ( In times gone by, we used to use the simpler terms, flip, slide and turn.)

Here are some of the things we discovered:

If you turn a triangle upside down it might look different but it’s still a triangle. - Darcie

I didn’t know that the special names of a rectangle are oblong and square. - Logan S

I didn’t know that many shapes can be called Polygons - Nabeel

I didn’t know the shape called a trapezium - Manuth and Miko

I learned that even if you move a shape it’s still that shape. - Amatullah A

I didn’t know that a square is also a rectangle - Chloe H

I didn’t know that if you cut off the top of a triangle it leaves a trapezium - William

I didn’t know that all 4-sided shapes are quadrilaterals because quad means 4 and lateral means side - Aditya

I didn’t know that some shapes have special names and others don’t - Ishani N

I didn’t know that if you have a square and cut some off the side it leaves a rectangle - Jesse

I didn’t know what a pentagon was. It’s a shape with 5 sides - Odin

Pent means 5 - Zane

I didn’t know that a diamond is a precious stone not a shape - Joshna and Darcie

I know that a 50c piece is a dodecahedron - Hazel R and Amatullah

I learned about polygons - Mervyn

I had never heard of a dodecahedron - Hazel O

In Literacy we are learning more about Non-Fiction books. We are reading and discovering new facts and information by using the features of a Non-Fiction text. We are learning to recognise and use a table of contents, a glossary, headings, captions, photographs and charts. These are features which help us to locate the information we need or want. It’s fun to explore Non-Fiction books because we can learn about anything we are interested in. I’m sure we will be bringing home Library books on our favourite topics in the future.

As we read more information we are learning to write short information reports using some of the features we have seen in our mentor texts. We are learning to sort our new information and organise it under headings. We are also learning to write information in our own words using simple sentences.
