SCHOOL OF POSSIBILITIES
What has been happening in SOP over the last few weeks:
Upcoming information night for students going into Years 10,11 and 12 in 2025 - Wednesday 5 June 7-8pm
The information night provides an opportunity for students and parents to hear about subject offerings at St Anne’s College. Our College and House Captains will be present to MC and introduce the night. Staff members will also present on the structure of the VCE and VCE VM programs, fast-tracking subjects in Year 10 and Year 11, College activities at the senior level, careers and pathways, VET program offerings at GoTAFE and on-campus.
A member from Latrobe University will also be available for parents and students to talk to about programs and offerings. Student work from the different subject areas will also be on display. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.
Year 12 Retreat artwork
At the Year 12 Retreat in February Jacqui Avard completed art therapy sessions with all the students and staff. From the beauty of nature, beautiful pieces of artwork were transformed onto gum leaves. The setting for the camp was a beautiful bush setting and Jacqui collected gum leaves from around the trees and students sat at a covered veranda overlooking the magnificent surrounds and painted one or two leaves. Designs were inspired by examples that were brought in by Jacqui, from the colours of sporting teams, from the flowers in the bush setting and creative imagination. Each leaf is individually created and tells a different story.
These leaves are going to be put into a commemorative frame to be hung in the Senior School to celebrate the retreat of our inaugural Year 12 cohort. Stay tuned to see the unveiling of the final piece. Below are some photos of the development of the piece and an idea of what the final piece may look like:
Plain English Speaking Awards Competition
Congratulations to two of our Year 10 students who represented St Anne’s College at the Plain English Speaking Awards today. Lillian Richardson and Manjot Kaur have been working hard on their pieces. The speech, composed solely by the students, is centred on a topic of choice and is limited to six minutes in length. Lillian’s speech is entitled “The Importance of Hate” while Manjot is presenting a speech “The Other Side of Fear”. Both speeches are very thought provoking! Lillian and Manjot recently presented their speeches in front of the Year 12 English classes, which was a great experience and opportunity for the students to rehearse. They did a tremendous job and confidently spoke in front of the older students.
They headed to Bendigo this morning to compete and both students did a fantastic job of their speeches. Competition was tough. Our students were the youngest competitors as well! We heard speeches from local Bendigo students but also students from further afield such as Broadford. We are very excited to let our community know that Lillian was announced as Runner Up for our heats. We are very excited to see both Lillian and Manjot expand their speaking skills and continue to challenge themselves.
Well done Lillian and Manjot!!
Year 12 Personal Development Skills (PDS) class
As part of a unit on effective leadership and teamwork, our Year 12 students are planning and conducting a wellbeing activity to put the theory students have learned in class into practice. The General Achievement Test (GAT)
The GAT will be held at the College on Tuesday 18 June. The GAT is a test of general knowledge and skills and is taken by students as part of their completion of senior secondary studies. Students' previous study of English, Mathematics, History and Science prepares students for the GAT by building their general knowledge and skills in writing, numeracy and reasoning.
All VCE students completing either VCE studies or VCE-VM studies must sit the GAT.
It is important for students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3–4 sequence to sit Sections A and B of the GAT, and for students enrolled in one or more VCE VM Unit 3–4 sequence to sit Section A.
Section A is a literacy and numeracy assessment comprised of:
- a 2-part writing task – 30 minutes
- 50 numeracy multiple-choice questions – 45 minutes
- 50 reading multiple-choice questions – 45 minutes
Section B is comprised of:
- an extended writing task – 30 minutes
- 25 mathematics, science and technology multiple-choice questions – 30 minutes
- 25 arts and humanities multiple-choice questions – 30 minutes
More information can be found at:
All Year 11 students completing a Unit 3 & 4 study and all Year 12 students will attend a GAT briefing on Tuesday June 4 during Lesson 6.
Exam week: Tuesday 11 June - Friday 14 June (inclusive)
The Year 10 and Unit 1 exam week is fast approaching. Students are busy finishing assessments and starting to revise for their exams. Students are permitted to wear casual clothes to school during this exam period. Students only attend school for their scheduled exams. There are some students who have nominated to go to the GV Health Taster Day which is unfortunately on the Wednesday of exam week. These students can email or speak to Sarah to reschedule their exams. Students are to stay in the exam room for the entirety of the exam and bring in their own writing implements. For the majority of exams it is preferable that students write in blue or black pen and do not use pencil. Further information about the exam period and students expectations have been emailed to Year 10 and Year 11 families.
There will be a student briefing prior to exams where the School Leaders will go through expectations and requirements for the exams. Parents can view the exam timetable via PAM.

End of Term
In the last week of Term 2 Year 10 students will complete work experience from Monday 24 June to Friday 28 June. This is a compulsory part of the Year 10 careers unit and students need to complete a placement to meet one of the requirements. Students are being supported in this process by their careers practitioner. All paperwork is required at school by the end of the exam week on 14 June. All paperwork needs to be completed, processed and sent to the employer before any placement can occur. This is a legal requirement in Victoria for any student going out on placement so they are covered should an injury occur to and from the workplace or while at work during the day. If you have any concerns, please contact your students' careers practitioner. As we expect all Year 10 students secure a placement during this time, Year 10 classes do not run during this week. The Year 10 staff are looking forward to supporting the Year 10 students with work place visits during this week.
From Monday 24 June, Year 11 and Year 12 students will move into their Unit 2 and Unit 4 subjects to commence their Semester 2 studies. Year 10 students will commence their second semester subjects at the start of Term 3. Year 10 students who wish to change Semester 2 electives will have two weeks to complete subject change forms after they return from their break.

Year 10 Italian
Students are currently learning about the history of 𝘭𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘬𝘢 or 𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘢 (coffee percolator) which was invented by Italian, Alfonso Bialetti.
After studying the different parts and their Italian name, students will go on to learn about the process of making coffee using 𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘢. Thank you to the many staff for loaning their 𝘤𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘦 for the students to dismantle and explore.
The topic will be finished off by learning the origin of some traditional Italian desserts made using coffee. Their final task will involve following a recipe in Italian to make 𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘴ù.
Viva il caffè!
The students were interested to discover the la moka (coffee percolator) was invented by Alfonso Bialetti after he observed women using a device to wash clothes. He used the idea from this lavatrice (washing machine) to create the very first moka express. In class this week, students used their knowledge of how to prepare coffee using the moka to make un dolce classico e semplice (a classic and simple dessert), l'affogato which is basically gelato (ice cream) affogato (drowned) in caffè (coffee).
Year 10 Leadership Projects
Year 10 students have been taking part in leadership development this Term and have been required to coordinate a community service project at the College, assisting with jobs around the school.
The Year 10 Leadership Projects aligns with the development of the students’ leadership skills in effective communication, collaboration and potentially conflict management as well.
Students coordinated the projects which included tasks such as assisting School of Wonder with their learning doing one-on-one tutoring during class time, making coffee and thank you notes, helping with production preparation, assisting maintenance staff and much more. Students then reflected on the impact of their projects as well as their own strengths and challenges.
Year 11 Food Studies
FOOD FUSION
Bec’s Year 11 Food Studies students have been studying the history of Australian foods and their cultural influences. Their project on Wednesday was to design a recipe, taking an Australian food and adding a cultural element, creating a FOOD FUSION to delight the tastebuds.
With tempting dishes on offer including Fish Tacos, Barramundi Burritos, Banana Bread Brownie, Biscoff Ripple Cake, Salmon/Rice/Avocado Poke Bowl, Cannoli/Vanilla Slice fusion and Air Fried Chicken Bites with Asian sauce, the room was a hive of delicious-smelling activity!
Students finished with perfect timing for lunch to be served!!

Competitions and Awards
The Furphy Literary Award is currently receiving entries for short stories and poetry. You can find out more about their Junior and Youth awards here: https://www.furphystory.com.au/junioryouth/
Applications are also open for the Plain English Speaking Award. This is a public speaking competition for students aged 15 - 18 years. Students can speak to their English teachers or Sarah Baglin if they would like any more information about either of these opportunities.
Expectations
All students in the SOP are expected to remain focused in their learning spaces during all timetabled classes. Students are to bring their macbooks, folders, pens, textbooks, a water bottle and anything else they require.
Lockers
All students must have a lock on their lockers and this lock should be locked at all times. This is essential for our Year 11 and Year 12 students’ lockers that are accessible from the outside. There have been incidents in the past where macbooks and learning materials and books have been stolen out of unlocked lockers overnight and on the weekends. It is a requirement of the signed ICT agreement that students have devices stored in locked lockers.
Year 11 & 12 students who do not have a lock on their locker by the end of the day Monday, will be moved inside to a locker indoors.
Pastoral Group attendance
Students should arrive at school in time to attend pastoral group each morning commencing at 8.55am. This is an important part of the day and a time for prayer and reflection. Teachers are able to follow-up with students and check in on how they are doing. Daily messages are delivered to students at this time. It is vital that the school completes accurate records for attendance and the roll is marked during this session.
Use of air pods and mobile phones
Students are not permitted to use air pods or mobile phones while at school. These items are to be left in students lockers during the school day. Parents are asked not to ring their child’s mobile phone while they are at school or expect them to receive text messages. If you need to get a message to your child during the school day, please contact the front office who will deliver the message on your behalf.
Your support on these matters is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your support,
- Mez Lia & Sarah Baglin
