PYP
Who We Are
Beaumaris North Primary School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School authorised to teach the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). It is an internationally recognised programme and provides the framework for implementing the Victorian Curriculum.
What is the IB Primary Years Programme?
The IB Primary Years Programme is an international programme of teaching and learning that focuses on the development of the whole child with the overarching concept of how to develop international mindedness. The PYP strives towards developing internationally minded students who demonstrate the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. Accordingly, at BNPS we aim to educate inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring students, who are encouraged to ask challenging questions, critically reflect, and take responsible action.
IB Mission Statement
The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
Our Vision and Values
Our Vision
To inspire students to be lifelong learners and take risks with their learning, pursue their interests and flourish under our guidance.
The learning community is founded on an educational philosophy centred on the child, and grounded in the belief that all students can learn and all students have the right to become effective learners. It is important to continue to strengthen the partnership between staff, the students and their parents if this vision is to be achieved.
Our school community is committed to the belief – today’s children, tomorrow’s adults. Through our school charter we will endeavour to develop the teaching practices and learning that supports this belief. We will use a model of professional learning that supports and develops these effective practices and has at its core, the essential elements for learning; constructivism, inquiry, collaboration, self-responsibility and personal development in an environment of challenge and support. These practices underpin everything and enable us to build a community of global learners.
The professional learning of the teachers will be both focused and tied to our agreed direction of improving learning and teaching, and as a result, improving student outcomes.

Interview with Mia and Charlie
Year 6
What does being in a PYP school mean to you?
Mia: It helps me understand how my actions impact the world.
Charlie: It means a lot, it sets us up for a good future.
Tell me what the Learner profile attributes mean to you?
Mia: Because we see them around the school and being talked about it helps us demonstrate them.
Charlie: It teaches you to be a good person and a good role model and hopefully make other people be good people as well.
After looking together at our school vision and values, what do you see that is important to you.
Mia: I like the part about responsibility. Just because we are not adults doesn’t mean we cannot take action and responsibility for what we do and who we are.
Charlie: I think the part about respect. It is really important if you show respect and it can follow on to lots of other people. If you show respect to someone, then they show respect and it will be like a circle and it will just go round and round.
As you are nearly finishing your time at Beaumaris North Primary, share with me some of the units of inquiry that you really loved.
Mia: I liked the body unit of inquiry in Year 4. It made me learn more about who I am. I also loved our Year 6 exhibition. It was great how it helped me learn about how people invented things to help the world. It really helped me care for those things.
Charlie: I really loved the Year 4 body unit of inquiry too. I did the muscular system. So l learnt about how the body works, and how you can take care of it. I really love sport too, so I connected with this. I also loved the Year 5 unit about natural disasters. I love surfing and I learnt all about tsunamis and the huge impact they have around the world and countries and their people.
Moving into Year 7 next year, what are some Learner profile attributes that are really meaningful to you?
Mia: I think risk taker and openminded. A risk taker because there are going to be lots of new opportunities in Year 7 and I do not want to be scared to do them. Also openminded because you have to keep your mind open to new ideas even if you do not agree with them.
Charlie: I think risk taker and principled. A risk taker because you take on all of these roles and it is a chance to say yes and put your hand up to do things and have new experiences. Principled because next year may be a lot of hard work, but it is important to be proud of anything you do. It is no point in doing somethings unless you try your best. There are always going to be hard things and challenges in life, but you should always try your hardest and be proud of what you do.
