By John Van Beek

"The highlight of the Gold Duke program was the residential experiences - Leeuwin voyage and Camp Hero.  These experiences weren't just adventures, they were deep dives into understanding leadership and gaining a clearer perspective on other people's struggles.   On the Leeuwin, it wasn't just about navigating the ship, it was about navigating the complex dynamics of living closely with other people from different backgrounds each with their own stories and challenges while sailing a tall ship around the clock.

I learned leadership is about both skills and also having empathy and understanding.  At Camp Hero - I  did a lot of adventure-based activities and learned a lot about mental health issues. I covered a seminar on the safeTALK  this expereince opened my eyes to the silent struggles many young people face.  I chose to complete the GOLD award to extend myself.  I learned a lot about my skills and capabilities. Over 3 years I have completed Bronze, Silver and Gold.  I am now connected to my parish with a youth band, I have kept fit with rowing and running and I can play bass clarinet.  I am also fortunate to have seen a lot of WA.  It has been a positive experience, and I would recommend it."
