BE WISE ~ presentation to Year 10's

On the 23rd of October, the year 10 cohort were gathered in the Clancy rooms to listen to a speech by ‘Be Wise Education’. The talk was given to us to promote safety against violence, and for us to learn how to control our anger. Allen, the presenter of the session, shared the story of Patrick Cronin, an 19 year old boy who was an innocent victim of violence. He also shared his own personal experiences with violence and what he learnt from them. During the talk, we learnt that violence has been so normalized that society finds it “entertaining”. As an example, Allen showed us the viral picture of Will Smith and Chris Rock. As a collective, most people laughed, but by the end of the session, our mindsets had changed completely. Violence is not funny nor entertaining. We learnt that we have the choice to change the future by understanding that issues aren’t solved with violence and that when we do feel that rush of adrenaline, we need to take a step back and breathe.

Year 9 Surf Camp

The much anticipated Year 9 Surf camp was held this week at Angelsea.

In an attempt to extract the most out of the experience away from class, this year we attempted to condense the activities of  four days into three and while tiring, it was great!! A primary rationale for this camp is to foster the connections that are made when away sharing meals with classmates, during free time and through the various activities. For Camp 1 some of the best energy came through Mr Robinson's Trivia extravaganza on night one and Ms Lomas' electric Bushdance, Macarena come limbo challenge mashup on night two .

Only gentle pressure was applied for students to don the 'wetties' (wetsuits) to be involved in the daytime activities of surfing, river kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, beach games ( Bondi Rescue eat your heart out), boogie boarding and ocean kayaking but for those who did, they found muscles they did not know existed as well as maximizing the experience of activities that very few families would have a chance to offer their children in an educational and safe environment.

Opportunities for students to stretch themselves,  to build the skills of problem solving and resilience are vital in their formation if they are to successfully navigate the greater challenges, hurdles and fears that they are destined to face in their life. Thankfully we have a dedicated staff at St Peters College who forgo their own creature comforts and have to rearrange things for their own children, to be able to take your young people out for these rich camp experiences.
