Level 5 & 6 Wonga Weekly

Week 4, Term 4

🌿 READING AND VIEWING

Students are enjoying their new novels. They are learning the importance of understanding character relationships, and are investigating the themes in the story. Alongside their novel study, students will be focusing on evaluating and inferencing to assist with comprehension.

🪴What you can do at home:

We encourage your child to read independently as often as possible. Discuss with your child different stories they have read and take note of how the characters have dealt with the problems that arise in these stories.

🌿 WRITING

Students are working through an author's process, developing a rich character and setting to use in a short story that they are writing. They have been documenting this process on their iPad.

🪴What you can do at home:

Throughout the week, ask your child to share their Keynote story plan with you.

🌿 SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

To support their creative writing, students will revise parts of speech (eg. nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives) and figurative language (eg. similies, metaphors, personification).

🌿 MATHS

Grade 5:Students are applying their knowledge of operations to multistep equations, using simple BODMAS (order of operations).

Grade 6:Students  are continuing to investigate positive and negative numbers and their application to addition and subtraction problems. They will apply this knowledge to Cartesian Planes.

🪴What you can do at home:

We encourage students to use Mathletics to further develop their skills and understanding of the areas of maths outlined above.

🌿 CBL

🌱 Our Big Idea for Term Four is 'Discovery'.

🪴Our Essential Question is:

🌏 In what ways can digital technologies improve our lives?

🪴Our Guiding Questions are:

🌏 How have the discoveries of digital technologies changed the world?

🌏 How do the positive impacts of digital technologies compared with the negative impacts?

🌱 Students are continuing to explore a new coding language this week through an app called 'Playgrounds'. This will allow them to create a system of coding instructions for a program to carry specific steps. They are learning about commands, functions, loops, debugging and more.

🌿 HOMEWORK

In addition to reading four times a week for at least 20 minutes, Mathletics and 'What you can do at home' recommendations above, this term:
