The Importance of Rest and Play in a Busy Term 1
As we settle into the school year, it’s easy for families to get caught up in the whirlwind of new routines, homework, and after-school activities. Term 1 is a time of transition - new teachers, new classmates, and new expectations - all of which can be exciting but also a little exhausting for children.
That’s why it’s so important to balance school commitments with rest and relaxation. A well-rested child is better able to focus, manage emotions, and enjoy their learning. Good sleep habits, downtime, and time spent outdoors can all help children feel happier and more settled.
With the beautiful weather still on our side, now is the perfect time to encourage outdoor play and family activities. Whether it’s a walk along the beach, a trip to the park, or even just playing in the backyard, fresh air and movement help children recharge both physically and mentally. Even something as simple as taking the dog for a walk together can be a great way to connect as a family while staying active.
I asked a few students what they love to do at home with their families, and here’s what they said:
“I love to rest on the couch after school.” – Aiza (Year 3)
“After school I like to cuddle my Guinea Pigs.” – Caprice (Year 3)
“I like going to my friend Zoe's house and reading with my Dad.” – Isaac (Year 2)
"I like to watch TV." - Enya (Year 2)
"Every morning and afternoon I do the Monkey Bars or cartwheels into the splits." - Eseta (Year 2)
So, as we move through this busy term, let’s make time to slow down, rest, and enjoy the little moments. A healthy balance of work, play, and rest will set our children up for a happy and successful year ahead.
