Year 3 & 4

Around our level

Our Year 3 and 4 students have had a fantastic start to the year! To kick off their learning, they explored the beautiful picture book "Welcome to Country" by Aunty Joy Murphy and Lisa Kennedy. The book provided a wonderful introduction to the cultural significance of the land and the traditional custodians of Australia, sparking meaningful conversations and a deeper appreciation for our country’s rich heritage.

In a creative project to reflect their understanding, each student collected a leaf from our school grounds. They then decorated their leaf to represent themselves, symbolising their unique identities and connection to the land. These decorated leaves will be proudly displayed in their classrooms, forming a colourful and personal showcase of the students' work.

Alongside these individual pieces, our whole school’s Welcome to Country wording will also be featured in the classrooms, emphasising the importance of respect and recognition for the traditional custodians of this land. It’s wonderful to see our students engage in such thoughtful activities that celebrate both personal expression and cultural awareness. We’re looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year holds for our Year 3 and 4 learners!

It was a fun activity and shows how we care about the Aboriginal people.

When I read this book I loved it. It was really fun learning about the lyrebird that was in the pictures.

I liked the art.

When I read the Welcome to Country book it told all about the country and the ancestors. It also showed us a lyrebird. It also has Bunjil. Lots of Aboriginal people believe in him.
