Next Gen 7’s – Battle of the Borders
Last Sunday, I participated in the annual Battle of the Borders Rugby 7’s competition held at Ballymore Stadium this year. I was privileged enough to be a captain alongside another teammate for my second year being in the team.
The selection process looked a little different to last year for me, as I was forced to watch from the sidelines with a hand I had broken about a month before whilst playing Global Youth 7s in New Zealand.
Luckily enough, my coach Luke put me into the team and as we began training, I continued my rehab hoping to be back ready in time to play for my state. The next few weeks consisted of A LOT of rehab running, and all my firsts back since being injured. We had a very short turnover period from trials to playing but we gelled together almost instantly. NSW flew in the Saturday night before and arrived on buses early Sunday morning, mirroring what we did last year as it was held in Sydney.
We had four games that day, and to kick it off we were all showed a power point of our attack and defence goals, team policies, and game plans but also photos of the teams that had come before us. Names like Charlottle Caslick (former Aussie 7’s captain who actually showed up to watch that day), Isabella Nasser (current Aussie 7’s captain) and Teagan Levi (Aussie 7’s player). All 3 girls plus so many more who are currently playing the highest level of 7’s for women right now off the back of the Olympics after coming through the same pathway.
Fast-forward to the games. The first did not start off on a very good note. The second was a little more competitive, losing by only a try. Before the third, I got my hand re-strapped as I had sweated off all the other tape from the 30-degree heat. In the third game, we tied 19-19 and had to kick to win, but we cracked under the pressure and missed, and we could no longer win the series from there.
The last game however was fuelled by dance parties and the frustration of losing and we came out and won 39-7. Meaning statistically if we had of kicked that conversation in the 3rd game, we would’ve won the series by for-and-against in the end. But realistically, the loss came down to a lot more than just that singular moment. I could spend weeks dwelling on that 2-point fact of how we could of, should of and would’ve won but that would be a waste of time because 7’s is a game of moments, and every moment could be the turning point. Unfortunately for us this year, we saved our best footy for last, but I am grateful that we got to finish the competition showcasing our full potential as a team and reaching the level of footy we knew we could play.
This was definitely an experience for the books for me, and I have learnt so much that I am keen to take on board for my footy journey this year.
- Reese Orcher, QLD U18’s Captain
