National Sorry Day

Today is National Sorry Day. 

 

I want to take time now to acknowledge all our First Nations families, their kids and communites. I personally want to let you know that I was thinking of you all today. I can't know what this day must feel like for you and your communities. 

 

I reached out to our Koorie Support Team today to share some of the work we are doing here as a school, and to let them know we're committed to moving from Sorry to Action. 

 

We spoke at staff meeting today about what National Sorry Day represents and took a moment to reflect on our understanding of this day. My team is thinking of you and your families. We know this day can bring up different thoughts, feelings and reflections for different people, and we wanted to acknowledge that.

 

I spent time today starting conversations about our next four-year plan and thinking about the actions we can take to continue strengthening outcomes for First Nations students and families at our school.

 

There was a sense of purpose as we spoke about this work. We know the most important thing is that this isn’t work we do to community, but work we do alongside community. 

 

We’re really proud of the relationships we continue to build with families and community, and we’re looking forward to continuing this work together.

 

Here's a really high level summary of the key dates that National Sorry Day is connected to:

  • 1800s and 1980s - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families. 
  • 1997 - Bringing Them Home Report. 
  • 2008 - Formal appology.
  • 2027 will be the 30 year aniversiary of the Bringing them Home Report. 

 

This is our shared history and I'm proud to lead a school willing to reflect, listen and learn.
