Starting Conversations After School

Sometimes the question “How was your day?” can lead to a very short answer! Trying different questions can help children open up about their experiences, friendships and feelings at school.

Some conversation starters you could try including:

  • What made you smile today?
  • Who did you play or work with today?
  • What was something tricky you did today?
  • Did anyone show kindness to you today?
  • What was the funniest part of your day?
  • What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

Creating small, regular opportunities to chat helps children feel connected, supported and confident sharing both the positives and challenges from their day.
