Year 7G and 7J Art and Design

Students demonstrated impressive creativity, craftsmanship, and technical skill throughout their ceramics artwork.

Students began by researching coral ecosystems, examining both the beauty and diversity of coral reefs today and considering how they may change over the next thousand years due to global warming, coral bleaching, and other environmental pressures.

Drawing on their research, students designed and created coral-inspired vases that contrasted the vibrant forms of present-day coral with their imagined future states.

They constructed their vessels using the pinch pot technique as a foundation, before extending the forms with coils that were carefully joined and blended to create taller, more complex structures. Students then personalised their designs by either engraving intricate details into the clay surface or attaching additional coral-inspired forms using slip and blending techniques.

The next stage of the project will involve firing the vases in the kiln, followed by glazing and a second firing to complete the finished artworks.

This task has enabled students to develop and refine their ceramic construction skills while exploring significant environmental issues through creative inquiry and artistic expression.                                                                                                                                                    Ms. Natalie Conti                                                                                                            Year 7G and 7J Art & Design Teacher
