Hello from 6D

This year, 6D have had the chance to do lots of exciting activities together. We have done things such as an EMC Transition Day, Summer Sport, Cross Country, and many more. We have also had a very lucky visitor named Mrs Korsak, who came to our class for four weeks as a university student. The students in our class have put lots of time and effort into writing parts of this newsletter piece, and we hope you enjoy learning about what we have done so far in 2026.

Food Science, by Levi & Lucy & Nathaniel & Leo

Every week in Term 1 we were very fortunate to have Food Science with Laura. We would always be so excited to go home and share new recipes with our families. Every week we would alternate between sweet and savoury dishes. We cooked honey joy brekkie cups, chocolate braids, veggie quesadillas, lemonade scones, cheesy rice and veggie balls and finally we made chocolate brownies! Every time we went to the food science room we would have to get the ingredients, read the recipe then we would have to measure all of the ingredients, then follow the recipe, then we would eat and say if we liked it or not. Every time we could never wait we were all so excited to try it!

Music, by Drew & Liam & Jameson

We currently have a number of 6D students that are jamming in bands every week on the music room garage stage. In these spectacular 6D bands, the very talented students have been learning and trying out a wide range of musical instruments including acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitar, drums and microphones for singing. We love Nirvana, Greenday and Radiohead and have been practising some classic alternate rock songs. When the garage door opens and the bands play to the schoolyard, students love coming to enjoy the great music we are playing!

In the first week of Term 2, we went to Lloyd Park for the House Cross Country race. It was a perfect day and everyone had resilience to run the challenging and muddy 3km course without complaining. Nikki from our class did so well that she got to go on and represent the school at the district event. In Year 6 we have also been doing sport every week. In Term 1 we got to choose from cricket, kickball and softball. In Term 2, we have started playing winter sports and could choose from football, soccer, netball and newcomb ball.

Maths, by Lilijana & Henry

This term, we have covered a wide range of different math topics, including multiplication, division, fractions, angles and many more. It has been quite difficult at times, but with encouraging help from our wonderful teachers, we have persisted through to complete all our tasks. Each week, we have also been heading into other classrooms to learn in our maths groups with the Year 6 teachers. It has been a wonderful experience collaborating with other teachers. A select few lucky students from the cohort have had the chance to participate in the high-level Maths Olympiad programs. There are five different tests over several months, and none of them are easy! The Year 6 students have much enjoyed learning and being challenged so far, and we’re all looking forward to what’s to come!

Literacy, by Holly & Kaisha

In Term 1, our literacy learning focused on the book 'A Ghost In My Suitcase'. This fantastic book was about a girl named Celeste and how she travelled to China to spread her mothers ashes. Celeste faces challenges and unsuspecting truths throughout her time in China. We think that the moral of the story is that you shouldn't be afraid to ask questions and to learn about your family's heritage.

After the two week holidays in Term 2, Year 6 is reading 'The Night They Stormed Eureka'. This book is about Sam, a teenage girl who has run from an abusive home. Sam fell asleep in a graveyard and accidentally travelled back in time to the 1850s, where she meets an old couple, Mr and Mrs. Puddleham. So far in this story Sam arrives at the gold fields on which she fakes her identity as a boy for it would be quite irregular to have a young lady around the “diggens” during the gold rush.

For the first four weeks of Term 2, 6D was fortunate to have a student teacher work with us in the classroom. Mrs Korsak was very calm, friendly and the nicest person in 6D. It was much easier learning with her because she listened to us and was actually more patient than the students in our class. She helped us with problems, and always figured the questions out. She's in her 4th year as a uni student learning to get a teaching degree and by the way we are her favourite class. Nikki met Miss Korsak at district cross country. Her son was there from another school!

Smoking Ceremony and Aboriginal Incursion, by Aria & Georgina & Haska

In Term 2 we had our first ever Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony at LPS.  We learnt what leaves make a fire burn quicker and how to make it smoke better. We did this because we want our school to have more understanding of the Aboriginal culture. We also had an Aboriginal incursion in the library where we learnt about leaves that are good for health reasons and other reasons such as the manna gum leaf, the cherry ballart, and the black wattle. We were also lucky enough to be able to touch a brush tail possum skin which was traditionally given to newborns at birth, and a stick that they use when they make fire. There was also a hunting boomerang and a normal boomerang paired with a bat that they use to knock animals unconscious. We did this to understand the ways of the Aboriginal people that lived in the Langwarrin area long before our school was built.

EMC Transition Day, by Kiriana & Eve & Annabelle

In Term 2, all of the Year 6 students went to EMC for an experience day. The activities we did were math, sport, woodwork and we talked about the specialist programs. In the specialist class we talked about all the programs including STEM, Performing Arts, LIS and the Murdoch program. We got to play some fun games. Our Year 7 maths lesson was about shapes, and we had to complete some challenges with a set of tangram tiles. P.E. was a lot of fun, and a lot of exercising! And we finished with woodwork, where we used tools, materials and our imaginations to make wooden model ships. It was a great day!

Although it’s been a busy start to the year, we still have much more to come! With our Sovereign Hill camp in a few weeks, the Year 6 Musical and tons more learning, it’s nonstop excitement here in 6D. Hopefully, we can enjoy working with our friends through our biggest year of primary school, and stick to the expectations (that we came up with ourselves!) perfectly. We hope you thoroughly enjoyed reading about our Year 6 journey so far, and we look forward to continuing working with the parents, teachers and our peers here at Langwarrin Primary School.
