Principal's Report

Dear EHPS Community,

Prep 2024

On Wednesday evening the families of our 80 Prep students for 2024 attended an information night. The evening was very well attended, and we look forward to the children and their families joining the Essex Heights community next year. On this coming Tuesday the children will have their third transition day and I know they are all looking forward to it very much. The new Prep students will also participate in an Orientation Day on 1 December.

Remembrance Day

Tomorrow, 11 November, is Remembrance Day. At 11am our country will stop to commemorate the sacrifice made by members of the armed forces that have served our country in so many battlefields across the world. Today, our School Captains led a service to mark this special day. Classes also made poppies and they were displayed around the school. Over the past two days fundraising items for the RSL 2023 Poppy Appeal have been sold at the front gate by Year 6 student leaders. Please make sure that tomorrow you take a moment to reflect upon how fortunate we are to live in this great country and for the dedication and courage of our armed forces. Lest we forget.

Happy Diwali

Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday 12 November. On behalf of our whole community, I would like to wish a Happy Diwali to all the families that celebrate this special day. The festival of lights signifies peace and joy, the victory of good over evil, and light over darkness. I hope that this celebration may have even greater significance as we move out of our dark times and give thanks for our reopening as a society. Best wishes to all EHPS families celebrating, and I hope that you have the opportunity to celebrate with your families.

The Carnival is nearly here!!

Our Carnival (18 November) is only a week away and the excitement is building.

The PFC and the Carnival Committee are working very hard to finalise all the arrangements for this very special whole school event. Many and varied stalls have been organised with the help of Class Representatives. Volunteers are still needed to help run the stalls on the day. If you could spare an hour or two it would be of real help so that the whole event runs smoothly and spreads the load.

Please refer to the Carnival page in this newsletter for more detailed information about this great event.

Just a reminder to all families that, on the day of the Carnival, children attending the event are under the supervision of their parents or carers. Any staff attending will be either in a visiting capacity or volunteering their time to assist in the running of the Carnival.

Scholarships to support students

The Department of Education administers a number of scholarships that are available to eligible students who are enrolled in Grade 4 to Year 12 in 2023. Applicants for these scholarships will be evaluated on their:

  • participation in school activities
  • community involvement
  • academic achievement.

Scholarships are either one-off payments or cover the duration of the student’s course or annual study. Many of these scholarships have specific eligibility criteria so please refer to individual applications for more information.

Applications are open and close on Thursday 1 February 2024.

For more information and a list of available scholarships, refer to the 2024 Student scholarships for Grade 4 – Year 12 fact sheet

For information on how to apply, refer to Student scholarships.

Hats – Terms 1 & 4

Consistent with our SunSmart School Policy we expect our students to wear a hat in Terms 1 and 4 to protect against UV and the sun. This is a reasonable position and I would ask that you assist us in this area. Whilst caps might be popular, they usually give little protection, particularly for the ears.

Please note that for your child’s safety and protection, students not wearing a proper sun smart hat will not be allowed to play in the yard and will have to spend recess and lunchtime in the shade being supervised by a member of staff.

Sometimes hats are misplaced, so if your child says that they have lost their hat, check the lost property boxes located around the school. If your child does not have a hat that protects their neck and ears, that is either broad brimmed, legionnaire style or bucket, I strongly urge you to purchase an approved EHPS hat from our uniform supplier, Spartan School World, located in Essex Road, Mount Waverley.

Congratulations!

We were delighted to receive the news of the safe arrival of Isaac, the second child of Kelvin and Sam Tang. Congratulations to them on the birth of their new baby boy.

Farewell

We farewell the following student and their family from the EHPS community:

  • Max T (PS)

I look forward to seeing you around the school, and at Carnival on 18th November!

Kindest regards,

George Perini
