Girl Powered STEM Day
On Thursday 26 October, four girls from Year 4 - Yilin, Ira, Ruby and Emily - went to Glendal Primary School for a STEM day for girls to experiment with science and robotics. We got to meet other girls who were also interested in science from Mount Waverley North PS, Highvale PS, Harkaway PS, Glendal PS, and Highvale SC. We did lots of fun activities such as coding drones to fly around, coding and controlling VEX IQ robots to go through mazes, choreographing a dance for a robot, learning about striations and about the angle of repose in sand.
We got to meet Bec who was part of the Australian NOVA space rover team. They got to go to America and her team placed second in the National Rover Challenge. She and her team also got to see the NASA building which has all the rockets that they are planning launch in following years.
Our favourite activity was the VEX IQ Robots. We got to code and control robots with cool Xbox like controllers and code them on an app called IQ. You would write down steps then download them so we can code the robots to where we wanted them to go. We coded them to go through mazes and challenges like working under a three-minute time limit.
It was a very fun experience and a great opportunity to be able to be able to come to this STEM day it feels amazing to be one out of four students .
