Prep’s Bundjil Nest Excursion to Balnarring

Yesterday, the Prep and Year ½ Community travelled to Civic Reserve in Balnarring for an Indigenous Learning Day. We meet together with Balnarring Primary School and Balnarring Kindergarten. The children participated in a Little Long Walk through Balnarring Primary School and the shopping precinct. The children and staff walked in unity to show our support for First Nation people and their past, present and future.

The Preps enjoyed creating some sculptures with clay including; Bundjil’s Nest, boomerangs and some Australian animals. The children also decorated sticks with Indigenous symbols and some used wool to create a colorful stick. The sticks were then collated to form Bundjil’s Nest. The Preps also engaged and learnt a dance from a indigenous Hip Hop group.

Lastly, the Preps participated in some Indigenous Games using traditional possum skin. The presenters shared some information with the children about Mangrook- the traditional Indigenous game. To finish the day, all the schools assembled together and watched an Indigenous Hip Hop group perform.

The Preps had an engaging day which assisted in strengthening their knowledge of Indigenous culture.
