Stage 1 News:

We have had such a busy beginning to Term 4 and are very excited to welcome Holly Newman aboard our Stage One team.

After a once in a lifetime trip around Australia, I am beyond excited to be back at the Gully for Term 4.  I have been loving working with the Stage One team and getting to know the Possums and Magpies.  We have all hit the ground running this term, with swimming and gymnastics, and a whole lot of fun in the classroom.  I cannot wait for all the learning that is yet to come!

Holly Newman 😀

For the next three weeks Chloe Posavac is joining Magpies to do her rural practical.  She lives in Sydney and attends Australian Catholic University. Chloe loves working with children and we hope this rural experience will convince her to come to Armidale.

ENGLISH

This term Stage One engaged with a range of texts created by the popular author and illustrator, Oliver Jeffers. The two texts we studied were ‘How to Catch a Star’ and ‘Up and Down’.

'How to Catch A Star' tells the tale of the boy as he goes on a quest to catch a star.  We explored the boy's plots to seize his star – ranging from using a lifebelt as a lasso to jumping up and grabbing it.

Below are some wonderful artworks that gave us lots of inspiration when writing our narrative.

‘Up and Down’ was about a Boy and Penguin who did everything together until one day Penguin decided he needed to try something on his own - fly.  After a succession of failed attempts at flying, Penguin realised penguins aren't supposed to fly and returned to his faithful friend on the ground.

After studying these amazing narrative texts we composed and published our own incredible stories.  Magpies created a storyboard, and using ICT, created a QR code to showcase their wonderful stories.  Possums published their stories using Canva.

MATHEMATICS - MAGNIFICENT MEASURING

In Math lessons this term, students have been learning about measuring length, mass, volume and capacity.  We experimented with measuring large objects using metre lengths of string, created our own centimetre rules, and measured the volume and capacity of different containers using a range of materials including sand, blocks, marbles, and paddle pop sticks.  Check out our investigations below!

GYMNASTICS

We are excited to share with you the incredible progress our Stage One students have made in their gymnastics lessons.  It's been an action-packed journey filled with fun and learning, and we can't wait to highlight some of the accomplishments and experiences of our young gymnasts.  Magpie and Possums learned about the importance of flexibility, strength, and balance, and how these elements play a crucial role in gymnastics. They performed basic movements such as forward rolls and cartwheels.  These activities helped them develop core strength and body control, while also building confidence. They worked on the balance beam, and with  guidance from our coaches, became more comfortable using these apparatuses.

SWIMMING

For the last couple of weeks, Kindy and Stage 1 have been participating in swimming lessons at SportUNE.  With the help of their fabulous instructors, students have been learning basic water skills, such as floating and kicking, as well as a range of swimming strokes and techniques.  They have been having a great time splashing around with their friends.  When students aren’t in the pool, they’re enjoying the fresh air and having a great time playing outdoor games with Mrs Harris and the other teachers.
