Principal's Message

Congratulations Ellen Hurley & Chris

Congratulations to one of our much loved teachers, Ellen Hurley and her fiancee Chris, who are getting married next Saturday. Ellen has had a wonderful impact on many Old Orchard students and families and I’m sure that you will join me in wishing her and Chris all the best for their special day and for a long and happy future together.

Year 3 Museum Excursion

On Tuesday our Year 3 students visited the Melbourne Museum, supporting their classroom studies of Australian history. Thomas and Sully from 3AT shared their highlights of the day which included:

  • The First Peoples’ gallery & models of early structures / shelters
  • Phar Lap
  • Rainforest gallery
  • Pacific gallery
  • Dinosaur gallery

Year 6 African Drumming Incursion

As part of our Music program, the Year 6 students enjoyed a highly engaging and energetic African Drumming incursion yesterday. The students loved the opportunity to work together to create a fantastic performance and the experience was made even more special given that it was delivered by one of our school families, Mady Keita.

Staff - Student Soccer Match

One of the features of Term 4 is the opportunity for Year 6 students to compete against staff in a series of sporting events. Yesterday saw the first of these with a football (soccer) match. The staff managed to claim victory in a close fought game; Year 6 teacher Michelle Chen scored the winning goal and is now reported to be considering a career with the Matildas!

Spring Soiree

We are eagerly anticipating our Spring Soiree this coming Tuesday evening. The soiree provides an opportunity for our talented musicians to perform to an audience in a formal setting and it is always a delight to appreciate their efforts and talent. The evening will be MC’d by Agnes & Michaley and we will also be joined by a special guest performer, former student Ryam Kotsiakos. Thanks to Rhiannon for her hard work in organising this event.

Punctuality

We have seen a continued decline this week in students arriving at school after 9.00am, as indicated by the chart below. Of the 93 instances of late arrival, 24 of these are arrivals between 9.00 & 9.05 and 19 are arrivals between 9.06 & 9.10. It seems reasonable to expect that action can be taken to ensure that the 43 students arriving ‘slightly’ late will be at school prior to 9.00am, which would make a huge difference to our classes and student learning. We look forward to continued improvement next week.

Kind regards

Duncan
