'Developing Our Talents' Dot Week

Jude Shields, Head of Senior Primary

If you walked through the Primary school in Week 5, you might have thought you’d stepped into a world of dots! Dot Week was in full swing, bursting with creativity and fun.

Our students participated in a wide range of exciting electives and workshops, including cooking, robot wars, photography, marble runs, cheerleading and clay sculpting to name a few. In Year level groups we had dance, Zumba, and cartooning incursions that helped students to step out of their comfort zone, develop perseverance while trying new things.

For the first time in the Primary school we had a House Competition. This showcased impressive Lego designs, trick shots, dotty drawings, imaginative cake decorating and House songs which were performed at our assembly. Cooper was crowned the House winner of Dot Week 2024.

The highlight of the week was the Celebration Showcase, where students proudly shared their creative endeavours with family and friends through performances and displays. It was a week filled with dotty fun, boundless creativity, and unforgettable moments as we worked on Developing Our Talents!

Year 1: Dream City Incursion

Keith Heng, Year 1 Teacher

On Monday, Year 1 students were delighted by the DreamCity incursion and engaged in three different workshops. They were transported to a virtual world where they were encouraged to navigate their way through various high-tech experiences. The students had the opportunity to learn about what makes VR unique, its possibilities for the future, and how it is being used in various jobs within the community.

The students became robotic engineers as they independently used the coding application ‘Sphero Edu’ to program their robots. They explored block coding, designing sets of movement, sound, and light instructions for their robots to perform.

The students also entered the neonatal nursery, where they experienced how to care for a newborn baby. They transformed into nurses, learning how to hold, rock, settle, change, and feed a baby. They enjoyed recording the baby's measurements using a scale and measuring tape.

Overall, the students had a terrific day at our DreamCity incursion, vividly recalling many of the things they enjoyed and learned.

Year 2: Brickulum Day

Michelle Wrench, Year 2 Teacher

On Monday, August 26th, our Year 2 students had the thrilling opportunity to participate in an incursion with Ryan, the renowned Brickman. The excitement was palpable as Ryan presented the students with an engineering challenge: build a bridge capable of holding a 5kg weight.

The students, divided into collaborative groups, embarked on this challenge by first sketching and labelling their bridge designs. Each group put their creativity and critical thinking skills to the test, meticulously planning the structure and stability of their bridges.

After finalizing their sketches, the students moved on to the hands-on part of the activity, constructing their bridges with great enthusiasm and teamwork. The culmination of the day was the much-anticipated testing phase. Ryan the Brickman carefully placed weights of 2kg, 5kg, and finally 10kg on each bridge.

As the bridges bent and cracked under the increasing weight, the room filled with squeals of anticipation and bursts of cheering from the students. The event was not only an engaging and educational experience but also a celebration of creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. By the end of the day, the students walked away with a deeper understanding of engineering principles and a sense of pride in their collaborative efforts.
