Exploring Melbourne's Landmarks: MCG to Melbourne Skydeck

On Friday, 23rd August, our Year 3 students embarked on an exciting excursion to explore the differences between manmade and natural landmarks, a key focus of our Inquiry topic this term. We are so fortunate to have the city of Melbourne as our classroom!

Our day began with a guided tour of the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. Our knowledgeable guides took us through the club rooms, up to the stands and even the exclusive MCC section, which we learned can take about 20 years to join! After soaking in the history and excitement of the MCG, we enjoyed a quick snack to refuel for our next adventure.

We strolled along the beautiful Birrarung Marr, enjoying Melbourne's native plants, gardens and landscapes. Crossing the Yarra River, we made our way to the Melbourne Skydeck, where students were thrilled to reach the heights of the 88th floor. The breathtaking views of the city, bay, plains, and mountains left everyone in awe. By the end of the day, our smartwatches showed we had walked over 12,000 steps! It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and exploration, and a fantastic opportunity for our Year 3 cohort to bond while experiencing the wonders of our amazing city. A special thank you to our parent helpers, LSOs and Aaron for supporting us on this day.

"My favourite man-made landmark was the Melbourne Sky Deck because I have never been so high in a building. When we went inside the Sky Deck we could see the whole City of Melbourne. When leaving the Sky Deck, on the ground floor, there was a large diorama of Melbourne City. My favourite natural landmark was Birrarung Marr because it had things you hit and it makes a loud noise surrounded by a big patch of grass." - Jesse S

"I enjoyed the MCG because we went to the club rooms that are not usually open to the public.  I enjoyed the Alexander gardens because it was fun to see nature's hard work. We were very lucky to go there." - Eva T

“I liked going to the MCG and being able to sit where the players sit during a footy game.” - Salvatore R

“I really enjoyed going to the Melbourne Skydeck and looking at all the different landmarks from the deck! This also helped me complete my ABC sightseeing activity. It was so much fun!”- Ivreen A

A Visit to the Shrine of Remembrance

On Thursday, 22nd August, our Year 6 students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Australian history by visiting the Shrine of Remembrance. This excursion, connected to their Inquiry unit focused on the effects of major Australian events on people, also ties in with their current novel study of War Horse by Michael Morpurgo.

Led by highly experienced and knowledgeable tour guides, the students explored the Shrine and gained a deeper appreciation for the conflicts involving Australia, particularly World War I. Each student carried a booklet to jot down new learnings as they absorbed the rich history presented to them.

During the visit, students were introduced to the symbolic features of the Shrine building, statues, and surrounding gardens, each representing different aspects of remembrance and honour. The guides shared insights into the lives of people during the war and told special stories about individuals whose acts of service greatly impacted the nation. This sacred space provided a profound platform for our students to elevate their understanding of the topics discussed in class.

The experiences and knowledge they brought back have undoubtedly enriched their learning, allowing them to connect with history on a deeper and more personal level.
