Book Week

Happy Book Week!

We kicked off our celebrations last week with the Meerkat productions. All students enjoyed watching a performance on one of the shortlisted books for 2024. Years Foundation to Year 4 watched a show based on the book Timeless and the Year 5/6s watched a show based on Being Jimmy Baxter. As always, the SKiPPS students listened attentively and were highly engaged and courteous. The actors commented on the behaviour of our students and the high quality questioning that they posed at the end of each session.

At our assembly next Friday, I will announce the St Kilda Park Primary School winning entries from the 2024 shortlisted books. Currently, our voting looks like this. I wonder who will come home as the winners! As you can see, some sections are highly competitive while others look to have stand out winners!

The categories we are voting on are;

  • Early Childhood
  • Picture Book
  • Non-Fiction
  • New Illustrator

Encourage your children to share their votes and favourite books with you. The display is up in the quadrangle. The colour dots that have been placed on the books are representing the year levels.

  • Foundation students are voting with Green dots,
  • Year 1/2 students are voting with Red dots,
  • Year 3/4 students are voting with Orange dots and the
  • Year 5/6 students are voting with Blue dots.

All these books have been purchased for each level and will be shared amongst the classroom libraries. There has also been a copy purchased of each book for the school library.

Book Week Costume Parade - Friday 30th August

Next Friday is the BIG day, have you started planning your costumes?

On Friday 30th August we invite all of our students, staff (and parents) to dress up as a favourite book character. As an added challenge, you might like to interpret the 2024 Book Week theme of "Reading is Magic".

The parade will take place at the end of our Friday morning assembly and be led by our Year 6 Library Leadership Team.

Pen Pals at Scared Heart

I continue to be so proud as students come up to me in the playground and pass me letters they have written to the residents at Sacred Heart Community. All students are invited to write a letter if they would like. Please have the letters to me by Tuesday next week - 27/08/24. I will then arrange for the next drop to be delivered to Tamara at SHC. Students can address their letters 'Dear Pen Pal' unless they are writing back to the resident that sent them a letter in which case they can address their letter back to the resident or more generally to 'Pen Pal' if they would prefer that.

I have chosen two more letters to share, I apologise that one of them is quite challenging to read, it was hard to copy the script as it was in pencil but it is too special to not share.

This year over 56,000 students around Australia chose to participate in the 2024 Prime Minister's Spelling Bee. At SKiPPS, we had 18 students opt in for this challenge. The opportunity to participate in Round 1 ends this Friday so I am hopeful that if we have any students go through to the second round, that we will be informed early next week. I will let the respective families know if we have students to participate in Round 2.
